Topic: Length of awake time for 2month old? Posted: 01 April 2011 at 6:12pm |
I thought he was capable of 1hr - 1.5hrs but recently we have cracked into the world of self settling and if i put him down at 45min awake he will happily hang out in there listening to the music/watching the mobile and drop off in 10min without fuss whereas if i wait until an hour it can be a 30min messy business that ends in being rocked as i don't like to let him cry.
But 45min minus feeding and changing leaves like 10 - 15min of real play time which is doesnt seem enough time to have tummy time and all that other stuff.
Not that i'm fussed i'd rather he slept well but how often were your little ones awake at this age - and what did you do to stimulate little minds? Sometimes i find myself just staring at him feeling awkward because he stares back like he's waiting for me to put on a show!

That sounds about right to me. I would go with the option of getting him to sleep easy. My girl was awake around the same length a bit longer on occasion. They dont do much at that age but look at stuff, so try putting some pictures up close and do a bit of tummy time. Around 3 months they start to stay awake a bit more. Remember you have years of looking after him.... enjoy the peace of him not doing much while you can!

45 mins at that age is perfect. they dont need play time really and just a couple of mins tummy time is all that is needed. you talking to them and cuddling them is play at that age really.

What they said.
At that age DS was awake maybe 30-40min before being ready for another nap. Talking to them, changing nappies and letting them look at things is heaps of stimulation early on.

Yea, as above. Jacob was only doing 45 mins at quite a bit older than that. At seven months, he does two hours, and that's been a gradual process to get there

I talked to her and only did tummy time once a day. Make the most of it he'll soon spend more time awake and being active and you'll wonder where all that sleep time went.

Agree with the others re 45-60 mins being the right amount of time.
When my girls were that little I just used to put them under the playgym for a bit, do a bit of tummy time or sit them in their rocker by the window so they could watch the trees.

Thank god its not just me, thanks guys

Oh, I totally clock-watched. Jacob was pretty predictable, put him down 45 mins after he woke up and all was fine.
I just did one 'thing' an awake period. Usually he had no-nappy time in the morning when it was sunny in the lounge, perhaps a walk next awake time, stuff like that. At that age, just being awake seems to be plenty stimulating. I remember worrying Jacob wasn't getting enough, since he seemed to like lying in his bassinette staring at space for more time than he was awake, but he's grown into a really curious little chap now.

Chloe tends to be awake for an hour - hour and half total so she will get up for her feed at 11am feed until 11.30 ish have her nappy changed ect.. have a little play on the floor (normally while I am making her older brother lunch ect..)sometimes I read her books and I talk to her put her in the chair but obviously I don't do all that each time she wakes... But for some babies they need a bit more time and for others like yours they don't need as much awake time xxx
