Topic: Almost time for school questions Posted: 28 March 2011 at 11:24am |
Our DD is 4 and has recently come home from daycare with a note about school readiness tests (eye & ear tests?) and lunchbox days to prepare them for school.
Which got me wondering...
How does it work here - when do you contact schools in your area? do you visit schools to see what you like? Are there waiting lists?
I guess we should start thinking about where she'll be going when she turns 5.

I have just done Amy's today.
If you know what school your DD is likely to go to check out their website - our local school had info for new parents about when you need to do things.
As I understand it, If you are going to go to a regular school and are in their zone they have to take you. Ours has just built a new classroom that Amy and the other almost 5yo will go into as they have so many this year .
Our kindy gives a list of likely to attend names to the school so they were expecting us! I went to a new parent meeting about 3 weeks ago and picked up the enrollment forms on Friday. A month before Amy starts we will go into the 'link' program where we will go for an hour or so the 4 Tuesdays before she start. This is to meet the teacher and get to know the environment.
Not sure what you do about private schools or religious schools sorry. Ours seems pretty relaxed and close to when you actually start!

Thanks jaycee!
We are thinking about a government school, there are 2 very close to home and then 1 next to her daycare (which is in a different suburb to where we live). I'll look at all 3 websites and see if they have any new parent info.

You might have trouble getting into the one by daycare of it is zoned and you are out of zone. The website should have info in the zones though.
Good luck - it is a bit scary that it has all come around so fast though eh?

Yeah, far too fast!! I'm a bit nervous for her and choosing a school suddenly seems like a big decision (I was very relaxed about it until now)

DS3 is nearly 5. At his kindy we have 2 days where he takes his lunch box. I also make him up lunch boxes on the other days as well, just makes it easier for me & it is no extra problem making it when I do the other kids ones.
He has had hearing checks at kindy before & goes to an eye clinic so I don't bother with that one at kindy. They also did a dental check at kindy but I take the kids regularly to a school detail clinic for check ups & cleans.
There is a B4 school check, think it is by MOH. I had it done for DS2 but am not doing it for DS3. They sent that out at about 4.5 yrs.
As for schools see what you are in zone for & go & look around it after school hrs. Most will have websites that you can look at & ring them up or go in & get enrolment form, have a look around while there.
I would suggest to do it sooner than later, especially if they start during the yr & not at beginning. I only enrolled DS3 recently & he starts in a couple of months.
Our school has introduction meetings that they do during the yr so they will invite you to the closest one prior to your child starting you can also set up school visits for your child & they will spend time in the class with you.
Also once you have found the one you want take her up there now & again to play in the weekends & look around.

I know its daunting...I am having moments of looking forward to having time for myself & OMG my baby is going to school..boo hoo
I would also suggest either putting away a few $ for uniform (if you have one) school books, new bag, lunch box etc as it all adds up & on top of birthday presents & party
Our school last yr told us where to buy the stationary packs from (paper plus) as they get money back off them. I found it a lot more expensive than buying them individually on sale so I would suggest getting them individually if you can. The kids don't get to keep their pencils etc as they go in to the class pool for the first few yrs & they all use them. I spent more on DS1 art pencils as he can keep them in his desk now.

Yikes - hadn't even considered things like uniforms or stationary yet!
It looks like DD would be starting at the beginning of term 1 in 2012 so still a while for us to get our ducks in a row.

DS2 turned 5 in December about a week before school finished so I decided to start him in the new yr & did not do visits with him (or DS1 who is a Feb b'day)am doing them with DS3 mainly as I don't have younger children with me so I can put the effort into it.
I would do the stationery shopping in the new yr as that is when the good sales are on.
I went to enrol DS1 in intermediate for next yr & they said to ring back near the end of term 2 & here I am trying to get organised lol

First see what you are zoned for or what school you want her in that is perhaps not zoned for you or perhaps an open zone.
Look at this website: http://www.schoolzones.co.nz/enrolmentzones/.
Then from there get the information pack from each school. Some have websites and others have just a number to call. Do a search on the ERO report (but dont worry too much about it).
Then limit the number of schools that you like and make an appointment with the principal to walk around school and ask questions. Look at cost of donations, fees, school clothes, stationary and trip costs.
Then get your passport for Belle and yours with the immunisation record (dont need it however) and fill the enrolement form out so you have her booked into the school and arrange the school visits. School will tell you how they do it. Some schools have set days and others let you organise with the new entrant teacher.
You can go with for the first bit of the visits. I went until morning tea and the next time she insisted that I just leave her completely alone.
You can get into an out of zone school but then you start with waiting lists and having to apply before a certain time etc. (so dont put your heart on this).

Thanks SMoody! I've emailed the 2 schools we're zoned for. Not as keen on the school we aren't zoned for even though it'd make the commute easier being next door to the daycare.

Yeah school zones are tough - I may not even be able to take my kids to school with me (primary teacher) as they hardly accept any out of zone enrolments (and not taking the kids would mean I wouldn't be able to work with the amount DH is away). With the earthquake though, if I can keep my job I can hopefully get a place now that we've lost a few kids. Still just under 2 years but already starting to think about it and have schools sussed for every possibility (4 diff schools in diff areas)
