Topic: 45min day sleeps Posted: 15 March 2011 at 3:41pm |
Those of you with wee ones that only have 45min day sleeps how long did it last for? Did they naturally start sleeping longer or did you have to work at it with white noise etc? If it did happen naturally...when?
I am trying to get DD to sleep for longer during the day as she is in a pattern of hour up hour down at the moment, but if that is what she is going to do then so be it, but Im just hoping it isnt for the next year!!!

Lily was 2 hours down 1 hour up until about 3-4 months then it was 1 hour down and 1.5 hours up! Then 1 hour down and 2 hours up... Lasted until about 7 months and then she just decided she would go from 3 naps to 2 and then at 8 months she was having 2x 2 hour naps instead of 2x 1 hour naps! Now we're back to 1x 1 hour - 2 hours depending! Babies change all the time!

My DD did 45 minute sleeps until 9 1/2months old. She used to wake after 45mins needing to be burped so wouldnt/couldnt sleep longer. We started sleep training at 9 1/2 months for the night and she started doing longer sleeps during the day. She now does at least 1x 1 1/2 hour sleep, sometimes two. I would just go with the flow.

DD has mostly always been a catnapper. She has been through phases. I tried everything in the book to no avail. Looking back I should've just gone with it more and not get obsessed that she HAD to sleep longer. She would often get up, feed, play, sleep, play, sleep then start the cycle all over again, so she would have two naps in the whole feed/play/sleep pattern.
I would follow tired signs and go with the flow, it doesn't last forever

Sandie, your bubs is waking on a sleep cycle, sneak in at about 40 mins & pat or sooth when you see stirring & see if you can help bubs through that sleep cycle into the next one. Cross fingers you'll help train her to sleep two cycles
I had my boy in a rocker & helped him go through until the next cycle by rocking him when he was stirring.

Or a gentle prod or cheek stroke! Heard this trick too and did it on a few occasions!

My DS was a cat napper from about 9 weeks old. I tried everything to combat the horrid 45 minute waking from patting, rubbing, soft blowing, rocking, wearing him, everything. Nothing worked so I stopped stressing and just lived with it. That all changed around 5-6 months when he put himself into a lovely routine of his own and did 2 day naps of around 1.5 hours each, give or take.
DS is generally a good sleeper now. He has one day nap of up to 2 hours (on the odd occasion will do 3 hours, but thats seldom).
In our mothers group, one other baby was a cat napper and she out grew it as well. Good luck.

Check out the Sleeptstore website, they have lots of good advice for eeking those sleeps out longer.
That said, I struggled with my girls, trying every single suggestion I came across. The only thing that worked for them when they were little was sleeping in hammocks.
Even now they are still catnappers but nowdays we just go with the flow cos I know if they need the sleep they will have a big nap - 2.5 hours on Sat and at the same time! But these are rare

My little one grew out of it at around 5.5 months, at least for her morning nap, which extended to around 1-1.5hrs. Nothing seemed to work to get her to sleep longer until then so she would have 4-5 naps a day, and she was pretty much feeding every 2-2.5 hours (we used white noise to help her settle, but it didn't help with re-settling after the first cycle). Afternoons always still seemed to be 45 mins.
She used to wake up happy after her first nap so I'd just leave her in bed for another 15 mins or so, and one day she just went back to sleep by herself, and then started not even really waking. It did coincide with around the time she started self-settling without me in the room though, so that may have had something to do with it.
Even now though she often still only sleeps for an hour - never ever more than 2 hours!
I'd say just go with it - I didn't realise that its normal for some babies and I wish I hadn't been as stressed about it as I was. Just give her the opportunity to go back to sleep and one day she probably will!

You are right, she'll sleep longer if she needs it, my boy did this for the best part of a year!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing worked, but at a year he started to move a lot more and sleep a lot more, knowing what I know now, when this one starts the same process i'll just live with it, it was a bit tiring, but he was a great sleeper at night

DS was a catnapper too and the only thing that worked was going back and rocking the hammock before he woke (rocking for AGES). But only ever worked once a day. When he started rolling and I wanted to change him to the cot around 4 months I was really nervous that he'd go back to only catnaps. But a couple of weeks after being in the cot he started doing one longer nap all on his own! So I guess he just changed. Then every time a tooth was coming through it was back to catnaps for the week.
I remember reading that other babies just stopped catnapping and was so sure he'd stay a catnapper forever so was pleased when he did change. It was a long 3 or 4 months that I was obsessed with it though!!

It's tricky, Noah went through a stage of 45 min sleeps around 2 months old, and then he stopped doing it. But now he's back to doing it again!
I find that going in and putting the dummy in, and walking away, as many times as I had to, sometimes works. I usually just do pick up, put down as well, pick him up until he's stopped grizzling then put him back down again. He's also a bit of a snack feeder so sometimes he wakes because he's hungry at that time.
It's weird, sometimes he sleeps through the 45 minute mark too so he must know how to.
Self settling definitely helped stop the 45 min sleeps but it's easier said than done.
I tried white noise which didnt help that much but having the radio on softly on an easy listening station did help, and he always has that on for his sleeps.
Sometimes if you get in just before that 45 min mark you can see them stir and help them through it by putting the dummy in, patting, shhhing etc
When all else fails, I take him upstairs and bounce him in his rocker, and if he gets sleepy I know he needs more sleep and so I put him back to bed.
Usually I judge it by if he's grizzly, he needs to sleep more, if he's smiling at me he's probably ok, and I get him up and entertain him till he gets tired again.
