Hi, my wonderful dd has just decided to self wean I think. She has been biting for a few days but only after she had had a reasonable drink. BF'ing has always been really good and enjoyable for us both.

Two days ago she had okish drinks morning and lunch time ( has/had 3 feeds a day) but at night just had about 3 sucks then bit down and pulled off. I tried a few times but she just kept doing the same thing. She would also then sort of yell at me like she was pi**ed off I was trying to get her to have it. Yesterday morning she did the same as the night before and after that I haven't offered boob again and she is not looking for it.

I am trying to get her to take milk for various other things like cup/sippy cup/bottle. With ebm, formula even cows milk. When she smells it is milk she just turns away. I am happy she is weaning as I was going to do it soon but I really think she needs milk of some kind. She is eating well and sleeping pretty good too.

Should I really force her to have some milk? I have kind of tried but I really don't want to have a huge battle over it. She does have porridge made with milk in the morning and eats cheese and yoghurt so is getting some calcium.

Thanks.

ETA: I know it's not my let down as it is still as strong as ever.

I would just keep offering the milk as she still needs it but as you say don't have a huge battle over it. In the meantime keep her fluids up with water and compensate with milk in porridge, yoghurt cheese and custard.

My two love custard I often make it baked with an egg in it. You could make it with EBM or formula because they should still be having some of that not just cows milk at their age.

Good that you are happy about her weaning though. I'm pleased my two are now too.

I've not had personal experience with this, but I do remember reading on Kellymom that self-weaning under 12 months is rare. Link here.

Sounds more like a nursing strike to me, because it's quite sudden. They have a few suggestions on that website.

Sorry, I haven't got any first-hand advice, but I hope you find a solution.

I would second the nursing strike rather than self-weaning. We had a nursing strike at 9 months, and then again around 11 months. Ditto too on the kellymom site

My DD only started taking a bottle of anything around 15 months (also when I weaned her), so just perservere and keep offering without getting too stressed about it (easier said than done!)
