Topic: B/f help....milk not in yet Posted: 22 February 2011 at 8:13pm |
Help....Poppy is 5 days old and my milk still isnt in. Poor baby is starving and very distressed...so is Mummy..... Having very very hard time....she fusses at every latch as she isn't getting anything and is frustrated. Any tips for getting my milk in quicker....we are massaging, trying to use the pump (although it's hugely painful), putting her on the breast as much as possible.... What else can I do? I am seeing a lactation consultant and although she is great, her advice of pumping and massaging for an hour after every "feed" just isn't practical with an inconsolable hungry baby and a 3 year old. Help!?!? I have been in tears all afternoon....I so wanted to breastfeed this time around, and I feel like I am failing already.

When I was in your shoes, the advice from my LC was ....
pump for 5-10 min after the feed
Switch feed so 3 min on one boob, switch to the other
Lactation cookies and lots of protein rich food and drinks
lots and lots of skin to skin. hop into bed nude and cuddle cuddle cuddle
if you supplement with formula, do it from a cup (so she laps it up) or syringe
if you want some EBM to supplement her with, I have some in the fridge from this morning and would be happy to give it to you

Have you had Poppy checked for tongue tie? My milk took a while to come in properly and Eli had a tounge tie which stopped him stimulating my nipple properly, so I wasn't making enough milk.
And pretty much what everyone has said:
- plenty of skin to skin
- plenty of rest
- protein-rich food/lactation cookies
- drink a lot of water
Is there someone you can get to help you out with your DS so you can have some rest/skin to skin time with Poppy?

Also if you look up eats on feets on facebook, you could also look up mums who can donate some EBM from similar aged babies while your milk is coming in.
Otherwise same advice as above.

Hugs MF, its a hugely hard time till your milk comes in isnt it.
I can only echo what the others said above, but what helped me hugely was I hired a double pump from The Baby Factory and pumped after every single feed for 10 minutes.
I also drank loads of Complan.
Huge hugs and thinking of you

Lots of good advice from everyone else!!
My milk didn't come in until day 6/7 (kinda came in partially day 6, but not fully till day 7) and boy, did it suck! We were in hospital, so ended up supplementing with formula and pumping big time. Do you have a good pump? You can hire double pumps from the NICU at Akl hospital.
Hang in there! It will work out, you are not failing! Breastfeeding is the most natural thing every, but that doesn't mean it's easy!

My milk didn't come in for ages either and yes, it is bloody hard trying to deal with hungry baby, they really are inconsolable. I supplemented with formula and it only ended up being one feed i think and then milk came in. I went on to successfully breastfeed for a year so fingers crossed for you it comes in soon and you go on to happily breastfeed as long as you want. Definitely don't give up yet. Can someone help either with baby or toddler?

Thanks so much for all the support, some great ideas. Does anyone have a recipe for easy lactation cookies?
I went and hired a double meddle pump today, and will pump like crazy...but my poor boobies are so sore. We have supplemented her today as she was clearly gagging, but I was also able to give her 15ml that I had expressed, which made me feel better about topping her up. She was soknackered and distraught from not being able to get anything all day that it seemed like the best thing to do.
The plan tomorrow is to offer each side, hoping that she gets a little bit, pump as much as I can bear it....and fingers crossed we start to see results soon. For everyones sake!!!!
She is sleeping so soundly now with a full tummy.....it's just wonderful x x x

Good idea till you get established. Supplementing will not hurt so long as you keep pumping and getting Poppy to stimulate production aswell! Double pumps rock I have to admit.
Sounds like you have things under control, awesome!
Keep up the good work

Sounds like a great plan! And don't worry if you have to supplement, we had DS being topped up every feed for a while, and we quickly managed to ditch the formula!
Here is the recipe I use for Lactation Cookies, someone on here gave it to me and said they got it from a Plunket Family Centre.
I make mine with chopped apricots and chocolate chips for taste, and almonds because they are supposed to be great for increasing supply.
125gr butter (can substitute with oil)
1/2 cup sugar
1 tbsp golden syrup
2 tbsp milk (or water or fruit juice)
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/4 cup flour
1 cup oats
1/2 cup wheatgerm bran
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
Any or all of the following:
1 cup sultanas/cranberries/chopped dried apricots
1/2 cup nuts/pumpkin seeds
125gr chocolate chips
(I put 1/2 cup chopped pecans, 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds and 1/2 cup chocolate chips)
Melt butter, add all other ingredients and mix well.
Roll into balls, then flatten.
Bake for 10 - 12 minutes at 180 degrees
Can be frozen once cooked.

This is the recipe I use. Copy and pasted from Breastmates website. I usually make a half batch.
Lactation Boosting Cookies
A tasty little receipe that will also help to improve the quality and supply of breast milk. Widely used by mothers!
Ingredients :
* 1 cup butter or marg
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 cup brown sugar
* 4 tablespoons water
* 2 tablespoons linseed (flaxseed) meal*
* 2 large eggs
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 2 cups flour
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 3 cups oats, thick cut if you can get them
* 1 cup or more chocolate chips
* 2 tablespoons of brewers yeast* (be generous)
Directions:
Preheat oven at 375 degrees F, 180c. Mix together 2 tablespoons of linseed meal and water, set aside for 3-5 minutes. Cream margarine and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mix well. Stir linseed mixture and add with vanilla to the margarine mix. Beat until blended. Sift together dry ingredients, except oats and chips. Add to margarine mixture. Stir in oats & chips. Scoop onto baking sheet lined with baking paper.
Bake 8-12 minutes, depending on size of cookies.
Serves: 6 dozen cookies (a huge batch)
Preparation time: 15 minutes
*Linseed and brewers yeast can be found at any local health food store, or health food aisle. Flaxseed is just the American name for Linseed.
*NOTE* IT MUST BE BREWERS YEAST, NO SUBSTITUTIONS, can be found at health food stores too. Bakers yeast will NOT do - it must be brewer's yeast. Or try a bulk food store.
If you have 2-3 smallish ones a day it balances out supply but if you need to boost the supply eat more.
You can also try nursing tea, fenugreek capsules, and nettle capsules to improve breast milk supply and quality.

Thanks ladies....have had an awful couple of days. Poppy is latching fine, but because she has to work hard to get anything She gets grizzly really quickly and if I can get her to stay latched she falls asleep. I have been pumping after every feed, then topping her up as well, so the feeding process is taking sooooooo long. Spending so much time getting her fed, means that poor DS is taking a back burner and thats It's all just emotionally draining and have had a few breakdowns about it all. I spoke to my LC today's and asked when I might expect to see results if I keep up at this pace (I get nothing from Lside and less than 20ml from the R) she basically said that I need to do it for another week at least. I seriously don't know if I have the stamina or the pain threshold (my nipples are grazed and sooooooo painful...sorry TMI) can cope with that. I guess just need to take each day as it comes. My priority has to be a happy baby and when we top her up she has a full tummy and is happy. Sorry for the woe is me post....it's been a really tough few days and I am just about ready to give it all up.

I had similar BF issues to you, definitely take it one day at a time I used to set wee goals for myself I will do this for 24 hrs til the weekend til they are 3 weeks etc it gradually got better. I remember the nipples being so sore anything touching them owww I was wanting to go about topless but still too prudish too!
Hang in there the milk will come it and it will get easier. Sounds to me like you are doing a great job though. Have you got someone who can spend some extra time with DS?
