Topic: Pre-pregnancy shopping Posted: 18 February 2011 at 8:36am |
Hi ladies, the other day I saw a gorgeous baby hammock for sale on a one day website super cheap, so DF and I bought it even though we are still ttc. This isnt our first purchase for future bub but is definitely the biggest, and it got me wondering... Is it bizarre to be buying baby 'stuff' before even conceiving? Do you all do it? Personally I find it quite exciting, and feel like it brings me one step closer to actually getting the baby.
So what about you ladies? Have you splurged on baby goods early on or do you find the idea unappealing?
:)

Some people think it is, personal i have brought some things for our future baby. My thinking is its good to spread out the cost of things (i like expensive baby things ) plus it makes me feel like im in control

The only thing I've bought so far is a book - 'Up The Duff' by Kaz Cooke. I can't bring myself to buy any other baby things, but I have done plenty of window shopping, and have already picked out the cloth nappies I want to use - haha!
I can't wait to do some proper baby shopping!

I have that book too! It's hilarious. I tend to go through phases (maybe linked to aunt flows unwanted arrival?) when I buy clothes, books, toys etc, then I buy nothing for a while. Good to see I'm not the only one hehe

I haven't brought anything directly for the baby - I have got a pile of bottles that I brought for my friends baby shower games and also when I was PG before the MC some friends gave us a box of NB nappies that their son had grown out of so they are in the cupboard to.
As much as I would love to start shopping I just can't bring myself to do it as after TTC for a while I don't want the constant reminder....but thats just me!! I know loads of people that have brought things and don't think they are nuts - so do whatever seems right for you!

Guiltily enough, yes I have read the kaz Cooke book from cover to cover. And Jenny McCarthys book Belly Laughs too. I intended to hold off, but seeing as patience is not my strong point (heck it doesn't even register on my Occasionally successful points list) I'd read them both within a weekend. Oops! No doubt I'll reread them when I finally get my hpt. I didn't initially plan to be a pre-purchaser and reader, but after I brought elevit I thought, meh why not, if I'm going to forewarn my body, I'll forewarn my mind and visa too!! :-D

It has been alot of hard work but so far I haven't brought anything, although we have been collecting a few things over the years from our parents they have been giving us little things for the last 4-5 years or so even b4 we started trying.

I did - somehow, it made the TTC mission easier for me, to collect some baby stuff along the way. I also started up a bank account to put the odd few $$ into to spend on baby things once we finally had one (SO appreciate that now!). I think, like Waiting said, it gave me some measure of control even though I had none in the baby-making scheme of things.
Whatever floats your boat, I reckon. It's not like it's some weird mental illness to prepare for something that you're hoping will happen soon, if it's what you feel like doing

We bought a big bag full of gorgeous baby clothes just before we left London to come back home from our OE- this was over a year before starting to ttc #1.
We didnt buy much else til we were preg.
Last week we bought a manduca baby carrier that we wouldnt have been buying if we werent going to have another baby some day, since DS is already 13 months. We arent ttc for quite a while yet. , but we got it now so we can use if now for DS and then later when we have baby #3

I think it's just whatever you're comfortable with!
I bought my very first baby related item the other day. We aren't going to TTC til May, but I've been wanting to for 18months or more so I think I've been pretty good to hold out this long! Though I did feel really strange being in pumpkin patch. Was hoping no one would talk to me because I didn't wanna tell them the truth, but I didn't wanna have to make up a big story either lol. So I've just got a couple of little bodysuits in a drawer. Didn't wanna miss out coz they were such gorgeous patterns

I didn't with my first bubs, but I really want to this time! DH says I'm not allowed to buy more things until I actually am pregnant (fair enough really, since we're hardly rich!), but I have a wish list running!

abit different for me i suppose as our 1st 2 we werent at all prepared for. I had a few little items b4 i was pregnant with ds1 but that was more stuff i had held on to of mine or my brothers. and some bassinet blankets i managed to score for $3 new.
when ttc for our 3rd however, we were ttc for a yr b4 i was pregnant. i went a bit crazy buying things we had more money and were were living on our own. it was more clothes during sales. with ds1 we used mostly hand me done stuff everything except carseat and pram. with ds2 we used hand me down clothes but everything else was new. so bought soo much clothes for ds3 b4 even pregnant. after i had ds4 i was sure he was our last and sold alot of his clothes. so our next baby will be getting new clothes. though i think i will be waiting til im pregnant lol.

I would say define crazy
its one of those things everyone has there own opinion about and as long as you are comfortable with it then its finein the end we all have our weaknesses and at least your buying things that will be useful even if its not till the future! I find that if i see something that is a good deal or somethimes relly cute then I buy it and put it away, i tend to stick to things like clothes books and toys, things that are able to be put away/hidden. (I have baby mad inlaws)

I think its a great idea to buy things for unborn baby if it takes your mind off ttc and like someone else said the feeling of having some control plus its super exciting!
I only brought a couple of picture books for DD before pregnant but I really didnt want to buy much as I didnt want to jinx anything!

Ok so I caved in today! Whitcoulls had a 25% off sale so I bought both Up the Duff and the Nz pregnancy book. DH has not seen yet and he's going away tomorrow so I have something to keep me busy while he's away! Yay
Will try to hold off on buying clothes as I think that would be dangerous to start, I might not stop!

YES! doing that and buying things for your baby you havent concieved yet i personally think is a great thing to do! of course you can go waaay overboard lol but i think its all part of believing it WILL happen soon and having the faith in that. when we were TTC and i found out it might be a longer road than planned for us, the first thing i went and did was went and bought a little T shirt that i gave to DH as my way of telling him we were pregnant- i HAD to believe it was going to happen or id go mad. turns out, despite the docs thinking the clomid and Metformin was probably not going to work due to the amount of cysts etc i had i got my BFP the night before going back to the specialist to discuss "plan B" !! so yes, i think its an awesome thing to do!
