Once the scabs come off it is tender for a few days and then fine. So I would say between 7-10 days. Macaroni cheese or scrambled eggs. Get the protein in him with the egg first. It is not only the texture but the saltiness of the food that hurts. Banana was sore for me. Soft but acidic. Never thought a banana was that acidic until I got given it after my tonsils out. That was 27 years ago and I still remember. As for fluids room temp water. There is no flavour to hurt the throat and no hot or cold to hurt the scabs.

I had mine out as an adult and didn't actually find the pain of eating after any worse than eating with a horrific case of tonsillitis. I suspect a lot of it is probably a mental thing.

Just keep offering all sorts of different things and ask if there is something he would like. He might see it as an opportunity to get things he doesn't normally have....

I never noticed any scabs coming off, I suspect if they do you just swallow them? My tonsil had fused to the back of my throat so I had to have a bit of that removed as well so quite a big wound. The pain went away pretty quickly.

Hi, I had my adenoids out at age 6, and tonsils out at age 15 and both times lived on jelly and ice cream for a couple of weeks (possibly was milking it a bit near the end ) soup was good too although maybe too hot for that at the mo... oh and lemonade ice blocks are great for getting fluids in!

The scabs come off when eating. You don't notice them as they just go down with the food. yuck. I would say most of his weightloss is fluid. Try jelly and iceblocks to get fluid into him. Popsicle type ones are great.

Good discussion. I was wondering about that.

I'm really worried cause our dr has referred my 14 month old. She is having really bad tonsillitis all the time now. Once it has cleared she has it again within weeks and her tonsils are so enlarged she is struggling with breathing when sleeping and gaging all the time.
I'm really nervous as she is so young. I want them removed, but then she will be in pain, but then she is pain a lot anyway because of the tonsillitis.

kazper. Getting my daughters tonsils out was the best thing we ever did. I was worried about it but the difference in her was amazing. She grew like crazy after they were out. Honestly measure height and then measure again 6 months after the op. They become so much better in themselves. People would comment on how much more settled and how much she had changed since the op. My daughter had sleep apneoa so a tired tantruming child all day everyday. We got the odd bright spot but after having two previous kids I knew this is not normal toddler behaviour. After the op it was like a switch was flicked and we got a regular child. She was 2 and a half when we finally did it and I wish I did it earlier. We didn't have tonsillitus much but her tonsils at regular times were touching and huge and her adnoids meant she couldn't breath thru her nose at all.

yeah this is the same as Caleb..the sleep apnea.Aparently the recovery so much easier the younger they are?.....My niece had hers done at 3 and was riding round on a trike round the corridors of hosp by the arvo....I think the pain issue is winding down now..only thing is he has COMPLETLEY lost his appetite... ...and has gone from 38 kg on mon to 32.8 today. He looks gaunt. He is drinking though. He wakes about twice a night crying cause everything is so swollen still he is snoring and the white scab thing dries out and contracts but as soon as he drinks some water and it moistens again the pain subsides.Im hoping we are turning the corner now.........and hope I say it was all worth it soon...
