Hey all

My 11.5 month old has willy-nilly started to refuse breastfeeds. We were at the stage where my DH feeds her a bottle (expressed milk) in the morning and I breastfeed her at night before bed. However the last two nights (and this morning just to see) she doesn't want to know me, basically doesn't suck and just starts spitting my nipple out, or worse, biting me, really hard!! We've then bottle fed her and she'll guzzle 200mls so I know she's hungry.

So, do you reckon she's self-weaning? Is it normally as sudden as that? She's always been such a "booby-baby" its weird that its a big fat no all of a sudden. I was planning on stopping at one year so its not the end of the world I guess.

Also if this is the end of it, I don't think I'll be able to express enough for two whole feeds a day so do I bother with formula or go straight to cows milk?

Just wondering what others' experiences have been or if you have any advice?

She's also just cut her fifth tooth - not sure if this has made a difference too?

TIA!!

Sorry, no first hand experience, but I remember reading something about breast refusal on kellymom.

According to that site, babies rarely abruptly self-wean. It's got a lot of good advice on it, and I'm sure there'll be others here who know what they're talking about.

Good luck!

My DD did that at around that age. I thought she was dropping that feed. I kept offering it too her and she picked it up again a couple of weeks later and is still going strong at 15 months.

Do you think that shes preferring the bottle over the boob??
I second MissShell in that if its abrupt then its not self weaning as they do it gradually...

Could be teething? Or a random nursing strike. DS went through this at around 6 months, but after a few days and lots of perseverance he went back to being the milk lover he always was.

MissShelt has given a good link to look at which definitely helped me.

Thanks guys - that link was great MissShell, I think it is/was a nursing strike - maybe due to the biting?

I tried again last night and she took one look at my boob and started to cry :-(

However tried again first thing this morning, she cried just a tiny bit and then latched on (with one little bite) and then fed from both sides. Yay!!

Will feed her again tonight and see if we're back on track!!
