Topic: Nigel Latta Posted: 18 January 2011 at 1:16pm |
Who here has watched his shows, or read his books???
I am reading one of his books now. And thinking about some of the things he is talking about i fully agree and im going to start doing it with DD.
I guess you could say he is quite old school in his thinking and advice.
What do you think of him and his attitude towards how we raise our children??

he is really good and in this stupid PC world I think all parents should at least hear him speak.
parents worry too much about screwing their kids up that they are screwing them up trying to be perfect and forgetting to actually parent their kids......lol....

I love his old school attitude, some people hate it, but it works for us. Especially for the older kids I've found his advice invaluable. Some people see his style as a bit callous I guess, but given his background with criminals etc I feel he's just able to focus on what's important, looking at the big picture, rather than getting hung up on details.

He's a psychologist, has a non-pc parenting show, show about criminals & why they are the way they are (beyond the darklands- think there's an Australian version?), writes books, & has a few columns in a couple of magazines. But despite all that doesn't take himself too seriously so he's quite refreshing compared to some other parenting "experts" imo.

I dont like him on TV very much - I find him annoying, like he is trying to be funny. BUT we got given his parenting book (this one - Nigel Latta) and its been fantastic. We have implemented quite a lot of his techniques and we have noticed a difference in behaviour.

haha i think he's great. i love his line 'do not negotiate with terrorists". My 2.7 year old terrorist in particular. Really he just speak common sense truth.
You never agree 100% with every approach but clicked with his philosophy, basic nuts and bolts parenting, without fancy fads and guilt trips. I like the way in his book he asks the kids things. So he'll be at some meeting with all these experts who all have these opinions and he says ' so what does Sam say?' and no-one's even asked them.
He treats kids with respect but acknowledges that the parent has to make the decisions cos kids do not have the capacity to consider all the elements and make an informed decision. That's why i would never consider myself a baby-led parent. Why the heck would you let someone without a frontal lobe make the decisions? I know that's a gross oversimplification but i'm being a bit tongue in cheek there.

I read this one and enjoyed it, although I didn't agree with everything he said.
The thing I think about Nigel Latta is that he has done amazing work with incredibly difficult young people (eg teen sexual offenders) and has really great ways of interacting with kids (I went to one of his workshops around working with high needs young people through work). That said, I feel like some of his ideas are more to be implemented *when* there is a problem, rather than with every kid - if that makes sense.

I really like him for the most part. Yup he's pretty old school in a lot of ways which is great IMO. There's too much STUFF out there to try and make us feel bad about how we parent. I know a few people who would really benefit from reading this book as it would make them less paranoid about what they're doing wrong. I fully intend to implement some of his ideas once Clodagh is a little older- have a feeling we have a little terroist on our hands too!

I was given the Politically Incorrect Parenting book as a baby shower gift and really enjoyed it. I do agree with JadeC though when she says:

I dont like him either, he is a bit of a dick trying to make jokes etc, but I do agree with his ideas on parenting - I definately dont wrap mine on cotton wool or baby them - they are little people not sheep! at times very naughty little people who push the boundaries and take the mickey!

I LOVE his show... but stupidly it never occurred to me to see if he had a book! Will definitely have to hunt it out - I drive myself insane second guessing my own parenting methods
