Topic: 2 month old and bath time Posted: 17 January 2011 at 8:00pm |
My baby loves the bath and kicks away with great pleasure when he is in the water. however following the bath (or shower) he cries and cries and cries like in his in great pain. His stomach goes all hard and he is nearly inconsolable for a good 30 minutes.
Tonight I put him on the boob and he calmed and drank and was fine...
Is he expressing his displeasure at being taken out of the bath or could he be having some bad tummy ache somehow linked to the water???
I'm not too worried about it, just rather surprised that one so young can already be telling me rather loudly that he wants to stay in the bath!!!
I think he is rather a big time water baby!

Have you tried feeding him before his bath instead?
My DD2 screamed the house down whenever we tried to wash her until 12mo when everything suddenly got better, so I can sympathise!

Could the warm water be soothing his tummy so when you take him out he gets irritated?
DS also LOVES water - the bath, shower, paddling pool and water trough and always has. He gets pretty grumpy when he take him out and need to distract him.

My DS would always scream after the bath when we tried to dress him, I always thought he was cold! It stopped eventually, if that helps!

My babies used to get really tired from being in the bath, so they would emerge cold, tired and hungry. I started bathing them in the morning soon after they had woken instead of towards the end of the day.

I was feeding him before but with the screaming decided to wait a bit after a feed before bathing him in case it was that. I just put him straight on the boob still wrapped in his towel tonight and he calmed so maybe it is just not liking being out.
I might try the morning bath, but my husband loves to give him a bath and he goes early so we shall see. don't want to take away his precious time with his son!

My babies have both hated getting out of the bath too. I think its cos they're reminded of being all warm, wet and safe in utero. Then all the cold air touching their skin is just a god-awful shock to the system!

have you tried splitting the feed? so bubs isn't hungry getting in the bath and there is the soothing if necc after. We had to start doing that as bubs would protest afterwards too because he was hungry! Also if its really close to bed time a bath can actually tire them out so maybe its pushing him past the limit? just a thought!
