Topic: Head lifting Posted: 01 January 2011 at 3:09pm |
Hi all just wanting to know when your babies started to lift their heads.
Hunter is 11 weeks old and still wont lift his head off the ground on tummy time he just lies there and refuses to move where as DD was rolling over just before 3 months so not sure what the appropriate time is, cant help but worry about little things!
Thanks for any advice

I have a similar issue (see the head control thread above) but my bub is 16 weeks old and has weak neck muscles so is still wobbly upright too! You may have already tried thus but our paed suggested tummy time with a rolled up blanket under baby's chest when starting out with tummy time - it helps lift their chest off the ground slightly while on their tummy making it easier to look up and around.. It has made a huge difference to my boy's tum time skills. Other thing that he will try his best to lift his head for is a soft play mirror. Otherwise I also find he likes tummy time on my chest - lifting his head means he gets a smile from me!!! Hope some of this helps!!

Lily didn't lift her head until she was about 3.5 months old, she had great head control from early on but on the floor she'd turn it fine but would mainly just leave it on the one spot!
She rolled at 4 months 1 way and then 5 months roughly the other way.

one tip I've heard is to give your baby tummy time on your bed then you kneel on the floor below so they lift their head to watch you

I'm finding if I give DD tummy time on me, ie: her chest is resting on my boobs she's able to get her head up really well, think having something to give her a little lift under her chest helps.
I also move her arms so they are under her.

A rolled up towel popped under their chest with their arms on top helps give a little extra support too.
I cant remember exactly when Jae could lift her head, but I know she HATED tummy time, so she didnt get much of it

Thanks for the comments, tbh i think he might just be a lazy bum! I have one of those little curved pillows that props nicely under him although he does just like to use it as a pillow. His head control isnt too bad when i sit him on my knee or hes on my shoulder so maybe hes just bein a bit slow lol

What Cali said, this is a great way to do tummy time for babies that hate it on the floor, dp would do this with DD all the time.

I thought the same about my wee boy...just used to rub his face into the floor and grunt when doing tummy time or turn his head to the side and suck his hand (he used to hate it and couldn't sustain more than a few minutes) then one day (about a week ago) he was suddenly lifting his head and propping himself with his arms...I was amazed. Plunket advised me that if he didn't like tummy time it wasn't necessary to put him through it as he'd develop the strength anyway...and he seems to have. I wouldn't worry too much.
Now he's straining to sit up and roll over every opportunity he gets!
Just wanted to add that we sometimes do 'aeroplane' with him resting on my shins and I bend and straighten my legs when lying on my back...he seems to love that, and he has to keep his head up!
