Topic: Pregnant with first Posted: 14 December 2010 at 7:05pm |
Hi all, I just found out last night that I'm pregnant (after taking 3 tests to confirm it!). Slightly overwhelmed because my husband and I weren't actually trying, but very happy
I've booked an appointment to see my doctor....but I have no idea what happens next!
Any advice??
Thanks!

Visit to GP, they'll send you for the first blood tests and tell you to find a midwife
Check out the thread 'recommend your midwife' in the pregnancy forum for that one. (sorry, don't know how to link)
Once you've got a MW they take over your care.
First big thing is the 12wk scan + bloods (optional, is the downs check).
Then is's waiting waiting waiting.
I found 40 WEEKS was a lot longer than it sounds!
There is loads to get organised, but 40 weeks is a long long time, so don't stress
ETA - and i forgot to say CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Congratulations!
Your doctor should be able to tell you what to do. Mine did another pregnancy test (although like you, I'd already done 3 lol), and gave me the numbers of some midwives to call. I'd call midwives asap to make sure you can find one you like and get booked in with them. Your doctor may ask you if you are sure if your dates, if not you will get a dating scan...I'm pretty sure your GP books you in for that but I've never had one myself.

Congratulations!! You should pop in to either the Due in July/Due in August forum too...depending on how far along you think you might be.. I've found it sooo useful to have the other ladies around all going through the exact same things...
What part of the country are you in...?

Congrats!! August is a great time to have a baby, you can spend the first few weeks avoiding the rain and cold and just snuggling with your newborn!!

Yay congrats!!! I second JadeC... August is a fantastic time to have a baby.
Do try to get on to a midwife soonish, coz they can get booked up quite fast. But besides your booking appt, you don't usually see them until 12 or 13 weeks, which seems like ages but it comes around fast. Also, get your GP (or midwife) to prescribe you some folic acid tablets coz you will want to start taking them asap. The elevit type ones can be quite expensive (but good if you're lacking other stuff like calcium etc), and generally you only need to take the folic acid.
What an awesome Christmas surprise!
