Topic: Only breastfeeding morning & night Posted: 23 November 2010 at 3:08pm |
I'm going back to work soon and my plan is to breastfeed in the morning before work and then again at night (as much as he wants).
I'm very worried that not feeding during the day is going to affect my supply but I dont have a job where I am able to express.
Any tips?!

I'm pretty sure legally they have to let you express (and provide a suitable room for it that isn't a toilet), but I can understand you not feeling comfortable doing it.
I went back when DD was 6 months for 3 days a week. I feed her once during my lunch break when I'm at work off one side only, and probably 2-3 times during the same time on my days at home. We are still BF now (no formula, so my supply must be ok).
She has a huge feed in the evenings. The hardest part has been getting her to have a decent feed before I drop her off in the mornings, but she did learn eventually.
I am often very full by the end of the day, so maybe it would be possible for you to express once you get home? Give bub one side and express the other? Then bub could have that side for lunch the next day?
Best of luck anyway!

I recently helped out at an HR seminar/expo at the Breast feeding stand - your work can get a pack about BFing and expressing as well as their rights/your rights regarding it.
They can offer you 15 mins for example to feed or express but without pay.
Will find the link if you are keen but tbh I wouldn't worry, other women have successfully done it and your body will catch on. Perhaps if you start now slowly so your body gets used to it rather than diving straight in... Although I'm no expert - thats just what I would do and I am sure someone may have better advice!
GL!

I'm a contractor and I could express in a bathroom... but I dont get time. My day is back to back meetings and deadlines.
Also not sure how/where to store everything... I work in an all-male environment and feel funny sticking a bottle of EBM in the fridge.

When I went back to work I BF'ed in the morning and also at bed time plus any time during the night. My supply has been fine and Im still BF'ing in the morning (have just dropped the night feed about a week ago).
Like you, I didnt/dont have time to express and I was worried about my supply but it has adjusted fine and I havent had any problems.

Your supply should adjust, I would be more concerned about how uncomfortable you will feel missing feeds to start with.
If you can pump I would even if you don't get much as it will help with any fullness. I used to put my EBM in a chiller bag in the fridge along with my pump. No one knew what it was. I used a manual one as I didn't have a constant place of work.
something like this or this would be great but I just used a bag I already had.

I'll take a hand pump along just in case I need to express if I am feeling uncomfortable.
I believe EBM can be kept at room temperature for up to 8 hours - does that mean I could leave a bottle of it in my bag at my desk for 4 hours and then put it in the freezer when I get home?

When I went back to work I fed DS (he was onsite) and dropped his 2-3 days feeds over about 2 months until I was just BF him morning and night. It worked really well for us, but it did take time.

I would leave it out like that T... could you get a wee container that will fit a couple of bottles that is coloured (so you cant see through) and put the expressed bottle in that in the fridge? Then your colleagues would think it was just your lunch

Yup! I'm sure the bottle that fits on my pump will fit into a lunchbox, so thats definitely a way of doing it!
And if I use a handpump I could just use a 5 minute bathroom break a couple of times a day.

We have a shared fridge in the staff room at work, and truthfully, I almost never notice what else is in there. If it's in a container like Mel suggested, I wouldn't pay it any attention, and boys are probably even less likely to!
