Topic: Baby Movement Posted: 14 September 2010 at 10:19am |
Hi there!.....we're having our first and am at 20 weeks, felt the little thing quite a bit last week, but since the scan things have gotten rather quiet...is that normal?
Just wondering if I should be worried at this stage, or not worry too much as it's still pretty small I guess and may have moved into a position where I can't feel it as much????
Any thoughts?

Some days babies are quieter than others At 20 weeks I could feel my son more some days and less on others. As he got bigger I felt the movements more and more. I wouldn't worry too much (I know that is hard!) but if you are feeling worried talk to your midwife.

I've had similar experiences on and off, some days baby is simply quieter than others. Now I keep track of her movements and as long as I get 10 or more during the day I stop counting after I've had a dozen or so then I know she's fine.
In the book I got from my MW it has a movement diary to keep track. At 20 weeks they've got lots of room to move and can be in a position that you can't feel them.
If you are at all worried talk to your MW.

Not sure about you, but I had an anterior placenta, started feeling movements about 20 weeks but was very random and it wasn't until about 25 weeks that they we more definite and had a proper pattern iygiwm. Remember babies sleep a lot so you'll have short bursts of them being active and at 20 weeks they still have so much space to bounce around!

Yeah I remember being the same and often having a glass of icy water and laying down would bring on movements.

 Hey, thanks everyone!
I had a bit of a flutter last night, yay!
By everyone’s comments I’m not going to worry too much at this stage.
Glad others have been going though similar things!
Thanks again!

Heya Murmel, I am 20 weeks on Monday and have been really worried about lack of movement too. I am sure people just brush me off as being paranoid but it is quite a big deal for a first time mum - I suppose we tend to over-analyse things and worry a bit more as it is so new, exciting and scary. I think I might have felt something a couple of times but not sure if it is really the baby or not but most days there is absolutely nothing. I am sure it wont be long before we find their kicks annoying and will be wishing they wont move so much. Until then your worries have settled mine a little. Thanks!

I was lucky to feel mine early on (15 weeks) but I had a bout 4 days after the first where I felt nothing! It's really only now that I a feeling regular strong movement, but again I think I am alot earlier than most, might be cuz I have a very slender tummy (well used to have one hehe). Alot of websites say it is normal to not even feel baby for the first time until even 22 weeks, so I wouldn't worry.

Yes, I think as first timer it is very easy to over-analyse everything that’s happening to your body at this stage. Every pinch and strange feeling sometimes seem a worry, and it’s probably nothing!!! Silly!? But I guess it’s better to be over cautious than just accept that that's how things should be!
I think it's great to have the use of a forum like this just to ask some questions and to hear others' stories, ideas comments!
Thanks everyone!
