Just wondering if someone can point me in the right direction here.

We're currently in a rental property that doesn't have a UHF Aerial ...we have bunny ears on the TV and can currently receive all the basic channels.

I would like to get freeview but I'm unsure as to what is required and what I am looking for exactly?

So my questions are:

Do I need a UHF Aerial (Assuming I probably do)? And if so, where can I get these cheap ...if I go on TM and get a cheap one are they easily installed on roof?

Or is it more advisable to try and get a satellite dish? If so, how would I go about that?

And what is it that I actually need to purchase, to get the freeview - whats the name/term for the device?

And I see theres lots of diff 'freeview' things on TM - has anyone bought one of the cheapie things and has it worked, can you recommend me a cheap decoder/receiver or whatever it is that I need from Trade Me?

I want to do this as cheaply as possible as $$$ is an issue.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help

Oh I probably should add that my television is a big old box I purchased about 5-6 years ago when I was working!

I think its a Sony WEGA ...if that has any bearing on anything? lol

um you can get an aerial or a dish. dish is easier as if you want sky in future it saves you having to get the dish then.

get someone else to install it as aerials have to point a certian direction towards the satellite.

your tv doesnt matter its all about having the aerial/dish and the decoder

we recently gave up sky (so have a dish or something from that) and tried to get freeview with a cheaper thing off tm. a 'victory' brand box. it says the signal isnt strong enough (which must be bull as we had sky) so we are gettign the propper FV box... fxed it works..
so i do not recommend a victory decoder.
the freeview website has a list of accredited brands. check it out. sorry hope it makes sese

It also depends if you are getting FV HD or just normal (assuming if you TV is 5-6 years old you would just get the normal, cheaper one).

We run FV HD on an aerial, simply because we couldn't be bothered getting the dish atm, but needed an HD box ($350) and a HDMI cable ($100 I think).

My MIL has a TM cheapie - don't know the brand but she's had no issues.

My hubbie is a TV techie and does all this kinda thing so...
You will need an arieal/dish. You will need someone to put it in for you and locate the sattelite. It would cost you about $80 here, not sure about up there. We sell Hills decoders and, um...I can't remember. You can look on our website for all the advice info you might need, I think, I will post it on your FB wall so as not to get my hand smacked here.
You won't get HD on your TV I don't think, however if you are planning in the future to upgrade to a full HD t,V it wouldn't hurt. We don't get HD freeview down here anyway so we don't "reccomend it" cos there isn't much that is hugh def on free view ATM anyhow, but you will not only get the HD signal, but may get other channels up there?
You don't need to pay big bux for an HDMI cable, you can get good ones for under $80. It pays to shop around, Th eshops will always tell you the $million dollar one is the best, but it itsn't the case. You do need an HDMI cable though if you do HD.
Will post you a link on FB and you ask any Q's if you want on there!

My Mum has just got Sky connected this week as she found that was the cheapest way to get a dish installed.   I think they've got a promo on so she got free installation and you just pay your first month sky upfront which I think is $50 and then next month she can drop it to the real basic package (you get 1,2,3,prime, C4 etc) they don't advertise for $18 a month till the end of her contract (I think its a year) then she'll just buy a FV box... cheapest why to get a clear picture without the upfront costs. HTH
