Topic: Sleeping Suggestions for 10 month old Posted: 15 July 2010 at 9:15pm |
DS is 10months old (nearly 11 months) and used to be a fabulous sleeper and always wake up happy: 2x 2 hour naps during the day and 13 hours at night. But, since he turned 9 months old we've had a few issues and he is always crying when he wakes up - he never seems to wake up happy now - I'd love any advice, or to hear from anyone who's also having the same issues!
1. First sleep of the day at 9am only lasts 40 minutes and he wakes up crying. If I leave him to cry he will go back to sleep but only for about another 10 minutes.
2. Second sleep at about 1 lasts about 1 hour and he wakes up crying.
3. Bedtime at around 6:30pm - he'll always wake up crying a couple of hours later around 8:30pm or 9:30pm and we'll put his dummy in and he'll go back to sleep.
4. Wakes up crying at around 5:30am-6am-ish, we'll put his dummy back in and we'll get another 40 minutes out of him before he wakes up crying again.
Any suggestions on why he always wakes up crying, how to get him to sleep longer in the morning, and how to stop him waking at 8:30/9:30 at night and so early in the morning??
Thanks guys!!!

The sleepstore is an awesome website and has answered many a question for me!
There are apparantely some sleep changes at around 9 months - see if any of this info is helpful for you:

Amy that sounds exactly like what we've just gone through. The 9th month was the worst and this month has been better, not great but better, and I've noticed the last 3 days have been great, at home and at DC.
I put it down to separation anxiety as Jackson would only fall asleep if we were in his room with him. We didnt have to be patting him or stroking his head, just needed to be where he could see us (generally standing or sitting by his cot)
Sorry I dont have any advice on extending the sleep. I still BF over night, which puts him back to sleep.
I hope it gets better soon.

Nathan doesn't like when I leave the room sometimes - and it helped if I just left the door open coz he cried when I shut it. Maybe you could go in and resettle him to sleep?
Is he teething again do you think?

I've tried resettling him back to sleep but he will only sleep for another 10 minutes and then wake up again so not really worth the effort!
And originally I did think it may have been teeth but it's been way too long now and still nothing has popped through.
Thanks for the sleep store link - I've tried changing his routine today like they suggested (by putting him to bed later in the mornings etc). He still only slept an hour (which I guess is better than 40 min) so we'll try stick with it for a few days and see if that helps?

sounds like maybe its a dummy issue ?? if DS loses it and cant find it you are need to come in and help him to re-settle.
Have you thought about those dummy clip (tomee tippee i think ?) things ??? it can be attached to his PJs and he can find and pop it back in himself ??
Its a guess and just a suggestion - good luck mama

I'd take a look at his morning nap. When I don't get great sleeps it often means its too early. 9am might be a bit early. With a 6.15 wake up we had 9.30 sleep at 11 months and at 11 1/2 months its 10 am. But all babies are different.
The sleep store thinks that early naps can reinforce early wakings. I'd recommend having a chat to them.
