Topic: In-flight meals Posted: 15 July 2010 at 12:48pm |
I tried searching on this topic but didn't find anything.
We are flying to Japan next month, and I have ordered vegetarian meals for myself and my daughter (because I think I get bloated on long flights when I eat meat...though not sure). Since she basically eats what we eat, I didn't want to order a kids meal so that it would be totally different from what we were having, and I was worried about what might turn up in a kids meal. Has anyone ordered a kids meal before and what were they like? We are flying Japan airlines.
We will probably pack up a few snacks that are familiar to her though, just in case she doesn't like what is on offer.
Any other tips? Thanks

When I flew JAL, I had a vegetarian Adults meal, (this was about 5 years ago so may have changed) but it was pretty much just a salad and some Californian rolls (the vegetarian sushi).
When I flew back I had a non vegetarian meal and it was chicken and salad.
Both also had Miso too.
Have fun in Japan, I went to school in Tokyo twice during college, once for 2 weeks and again for 2 months in 6th form! Miss the place, the people and the food like crazy!!

Cant help but its awesome you can order a meal for her! We flew to australia 2 years ago with my then 1.5year old son, and he got nothing! Well ok, i lie, he ate all of mine and then i got nothing but you know what i mean lol.
I would also pack snacks that u can take, so long as theyre eaten on the plane and not taken off u have no worries. Also 1 toy we found was the best for the plane, a magnadoodle, we actually picked up one from the $2 shop - and it lasted ages!

Just a thought but are you able to ring out and find out? I know they have different meals each flight but they might be able to tell you their selection or what's on offer for that specific flight.

Kimnthekids - We are able to order a meal for her because we decided to pay for a seat for her to make it easy on ourselves..... Yes lil_Nic 9, I suppose closer to the time I could ring up and see if they have a menu and then make a final decision - good idea, thanks. And yup looking forward to going to Japan - my husband is Japanese and my daughter half Japanese so it will be really good for her. Looking forward to my mother in law's home cooked food! Not looking forward to the weight-gain....japanese food can be healthy but nothing is healthy if you eat lots!

If u look at the JAL website does it give you an example menu for their meals? I usually just go with the "Asian" food option on flights now so not sure how the vege meal would be but we have flown JAL a few times and the food us all right in general.
We recently flew with SIA back to Australia and ordered a childs meal for our 19mo. On the way over he got a pasta bake (cheesey) type dish plus snacks and a drink. The snacks are usually choc/junk food but he did get a box of sultanas too. The light meal was chicken sausages and pancakes I think?
Coming back he had YUMMY teriyaki chicken pieces and potato pom poms, chocolate pandas and a drink. Light meal I can't remember ...
Take lots of your own snacks, Japan is nothing like NZ or aus re bringing in food so you don't need to worry about leaving stuff behind on the plane either :)
have a great time!!! And enjoy the home cooking!

can't help on the menu thing, but just thought i'd share that ALL kids are allowed meals on flights, whether they have a seat or not... but you do have to order it specially (childs meal or infant meal) and link it to the parent's seat for it to come through. if you're flying with an "infant" (under 2 years with no seat purchased) and you don't order a special meal for them, they won't get anything.

Stogglebox, I would definitely take snacks with you. We flew to Perth on AirNZ and though we requested an infant meal, we weren't given one on the way there. DD was asleep during mealtime but luckily we had stocked up on snacks to take to keep her quiet
On the way back, her meal didn't come as her name wasn't on the list but the staff rustled one up for her thank goodness. It was grated carrot, cheese, shredded chicken & yoghurt. She didn't eat much of it but we had snacks with us that time too, just in case.
Good luck!
