Topic: baby gastro Posted: 04 July 2010 at 6:10pm |
DS has picked up some kind of tummy bug. Vomiting on Thurs, diarrhoea from/since Friday.
DH and I both got it on Saturday, but not as bad as DS. We simply stopped eating and we both had a bit of bread today (36hrs fasting) and think we're good to go for dinner tonight.
DS on the other hand.... He's been pretty much off solid food till this morning, and still drinking FF throughout and a little water (not into water as a drink). Thing is it doesn't appear to be getting better for him.
I know if it was another adult I'd say - nothing but water for 24hrs min. I just don't know what to do for him. He's been so hungry today I've been feeding him (baby cereal, rice, toast) but I think it's making the diarrhoea worse (more ammo).
Any suggestions?

DS got really bad gastro when he was 8 months old
he didnt eat solids for 4 days and no fluids for 6 days.. all water and Breastmilk came out either end as fast as it went in..
We ended up in hospital and they suggested this...
The hydrating sachets diluted in water 5mls in a siringe every 5 minutes.. up to 100 mil...
take a break and go again in an hour... if he can keep that down its a good sign.
Unfortaunately it is a waiting game and there isnt a lot you can do.. keep them comfortable and offer pamol (to weight requirement 4 hourly)
Good Luck mama.. i know its horrible.. hang in there ((((hugs))))

Sucks, huge hugs, unfortunately some bugs can last for quite a while longer,
the formula will be probably making his tummy worse as the milk protein plays with the irritated stomach., so if he will take other things, like pedialyte, then that is what I would stick to, or if he won't do anything else, at least dilute the formula. then try something dry like toast if he's real hungry, and as above said 5mls every 5mins. Little and often is usually the key, rather than big gulps. and persistence.
Good Luck

When Jackson had a tummy bug the Dr said if he was formula fed to change to a soy based one while he was unwell. Not too sure why sorry, I didnt ask more cos he is BF'ed.
Jackson had toast and rehydration fluid from the pharmacy (the sachets ones) for about 4/5 days. Good luck I hope he gets better soon.

Stomach bugs can make them lactose intolerant for a while. You can get lactose free formula, I'm not to sure about using a soy one. Personally I would take him to the doctor because if he is too dehydrated they will want to put him on a drip at the hospital and even if he's not that bad the dr will be able to give you paedialyte on script and advise you about the formula and how long the lactose intolerance is likely to last cos I think it can be quite a while.

We all had a horrid tummy bug a few weeks back, DS got it first, then DH then me then DD
We all had the vomiting first, then a few days of the other end, that lasted 3 days(ish).
For the kids I just made sure they had water and DD still had her formula, and I gave them dry foods, it still came out the other end, but they needed something in their tummys.
It does take quite a while to recover sometimes.

Lachie got that first two days into preschool, then we all got it!!!!
Keeping fluids up is the most important. We got pedialyte just incase he didn't drink.
If they don't drink, then its time to see doc asap.
It took 10 days for Lachies diarrhea to go away!!!
