I have 46 sashays left of Infant Gavison from when Violette suffered reflux. First person to PM me their address can have them :) It's either that of get put in to the bin, but that seems like a bit of waste. Expiry date is 10Oct11

Hey Em,

I'm interested in how you 'knew' to stop giving gaviscon...

The girls are on Gaviscon and Renitidine (twice a day), and every time I go for a refill I ask how will we know to stop/when do we stop... and get no real answer...

Is it because Violette is upright more now?

Cheers :o)

I know it was a q for em, and I'm no expert, but basically the Gaviscon is to thicken and neutralise the stomach contents. I basically continually experiment to find the right dosage - too much and she gets constipated, too little and she gets upset.

I started out stretching out the time between doses, but you could also try reducing the dose? We only give one sachet at a time now. Once DD started crawling and sitting, she seemed a lot happier most of the time, and seemed to tolerate missing doses (i discovered this by accident! whoops). What I've found now is that she's fine during the day because she's having 3 (tiny) meals of solids and when she has solids in her tum, she seems ok. She is still waking for feeds 2-3 hourly all night, and by about 3am she seems to need a dose as all the solids are digested and her tummy is all sloppy and liquid again. If she was sleeping longer, she'd probably not need a dose at all.

So I guess in all that, it's just trial and error. What happens if you miss a dose? If that works, try every second feed? And so on, until you've found what your girls need and what they can get on without.

To be honest we probably took her off the meds sooner than we should have. But the Gavison was causing her to get really backed up and the screaming from trying to poop was way worse than reflux. Then the dr gave her losac but it made her power chuck, so I reduced the amount of Gavison until it was obvious she didn't really need it any more. I think that the fact that she sits up and is now eating solids helps. I'd just try reducing the amount that you are giving her and seeing if it makes a difference.

Thanks Em and T-Rex.

Neither of the girls are sitting on their own yet.

Apparently the renitidine just reduces itself as they put on weight (if we don't up the dose) and so they wean from that over time. Not really willing to experiment with that just yet as they got mighty upset when it wasn't high enough a couple of months ago, and it takes a few days to 'work'.

They do have 3 reasonable sized meals of solids a day, and 3 bottles each per day. Each bottle is 270ml made up - so two sachets per bottle. I guess we could try just 1 sachet and see what happens...

Thanks again :o)

This thread made me think about the 100's of sachets I have at home.
Hiawatha is off the Gaviscon (onto AR formula) and on Ranitidine.

I was wondering what to do with it as the doc didn't care.

Are you allowed to give it away? Being pharmacy meds an all?
I'd love to get rid of it as it's blocking my kitchen cupboard!

You can buy Infant Gaviscon over the counter so I guess so.
