Topic: Getting around Auckland... Posted: 24 June 2010 at 10:55pm |
Ok, so it looks like I'm going to be doing a flying visit to Akld next week some time to pick up our new car...I will be flying up, and the car is on the North Shore. What is the best way to get from the airport to the North Shore (i.e. bus, train..)? At this stage it looks like I will get there around 2.30pm, so not rush hour or anything. Also, how long does it take to get from the airport to the North Shore (Bayview, to be exact)?? Am I likely to get stuck in peak hour traffic on the way back

Catch the Airport Express into town which will arrive at the Britomart. There are a number of options from there.
Airport Express.
Use the journey planner on Maxx to give you some options. Note that Auckland has a number of different bus companies and one ticket won't cover everything so you just need to work out the best option for where you're going.

Peak traffic will be starting around 3pm with school traffic, any possibility of the seller meeting you closer to town?

Oh and the traffic is pretty much always bad on the southern motorway... doesnt seem to matter what time I leave I always get stuck ... actually its not that much better coming into town from this side either.... they are doing some major works that seem to be slowing everything down.
Yeah I would say you will hit the traffic heading south out of the city, any earlier flights?

C&J - apparently not, but I will ask him again when he has the new WOF and I have booked the flight...
Mel...you will probably have seen the new car then, as he operates his business in Bayview Thank you for the offer...I will definitely keep it in mind!! It seems a long way out of the way Otherwise I might have to actually call in and say hi and actually meet you and Jake, if you were keen!

Hrmm....yep there are earlier flights, landing at either 9am or 11.30am...
The original flight I was going to take was a special cheap deal but it's finished now. Basically I am flying up, picking up the car and then driving home the same day, unless I can only get a late afternoon flight, in which case I would stay overnight. It's kind of dependent on when the seller gets the WOF and fixes anything that might be required to get it. Hopefully it will fly through without needing anything, and I can be there Tuesday morning/early afternoon sometime.

Seriously take one of the girls up on their offer of a lift. Public transport in Auckland is arse and you're pretty much going from one end to the complete other end.

Thanks ladies....
I have booked my flight which arrives in Akld at 11.05am on Tuesday morning...if that suits you Debs, I would love to take you up on your offer - if it doesn't, that's cool!!!! And then, Mel, maybe I can come and say hi to you after I have picked up the car?? Be nice to have a wee break before I have to spend 5-6 hours driving home again (and to actually meet you)!!!
Approx how long does it take from the airport to Bayview??
ETA: I would feel mean taking you up on your offer Mel, because it's opposite sides of Akld!!! It is for Debs as well, really....arrgghhh!!! I feel a bit stink

If you don't end up getting a lift with someone, just catch an airport shuttle bus, cheaper than a taxi and they will drop you off at your destination. There are loads of them right outside the terminal, no need to book.
If you're not familar with Auckland I personally wouldn't bother trying to catch public transport especially if you're trying to get there and back asap to avoid traffic.

Take up an offer. The airport is miles away!
It took Kylie and I about 30 minutes to get to Mels place from that side of town and that was off peak.

Yeah 30-45 mins from the airport to Bayview...
Its probably easier for Deb at that time of the day but if she cant do it I am still happy too
Of course we would love to catch up... a drink and a rest will be well in order before the long drive home!!!
