Kylah will not eat real fruit, only bananas and mangoes, but she will eat anything out of a tin. I only buy the fruit juice stuff, but some fruit is better than no fruit right?

Is tinned fruit bad for her?

I usually give it to DS too, so long as it's the fruit in juice I'm sure it's better than nothing, I'm sure I've seen that some of the watties tins have the 5+ a day sign on them

Nah I don't reckon. Jake eats tons of tinned fruit. I drain the fruit juice off and sometimes rinse the fruit but otherwise just give it to him.

I think that the tinned fruit will have been cooked right? But I don't think the cooking process would have made too much of a difference to the goodness of the fruit and as long as not the syrup fruit then there won't be any extra sugar or anything.

Oh and cooked I mean only lightly cooked, can't remember the name...

Tinned fruit today is like bottling, what our Grandmas & Mothers did yesteryear.

Nope nothing wrong with tinned fruit, it also tends to be canned not long after picking so could be argued its better than 'fresh' fruit that has been sitting in a coolstore for months.

yea id have no prob with it. mack used to choke easy so he gets some stuff tinned cos it means i dont have to pre cook it and it stores heaps better. check the ingredients list at the back cos they are ordered in quantity. if there is sugar in it or something other than pure fruit or like addititives close to the top of the list then maybe look at another brand :)

I spoke to a dietician about this once, as my daughter has food allergies and was reacting to tinned fruit. Tinned fruit tends to be made of less ripe fruit and fruit that has been grown out of season. There's nothing wrong with this, except that it tends to be high in salicylates because of this. If your child is sensitive to salicylates I wouldn't use it, but if they're not, it's fine!

tinned fruit is great, esp when things are out of season and cost a fortune!  My boys love fruit salad with their breakfast sometimes  I'd go with it while she is eating it

Very true, I only use the ones in syrup as the fruit juice ones are also very high in salicylates cause the the skins are made into juice. Watties usually has the softest fruit in their cans & I"ve also had good luck with SPC. Budget is very hit & miss.

I rinse the excess syrup off the pears we use.
