Due to me needing an operation and needing to take strong medication for 3 months, I have been told by the Doctor that I will need to stop breastfeeding.
I am gutted by this and am not ready to do it, but I have been in pain for over 2 and a half months now, and it wont get better without this medication.
I'm trying decide what to do and whether or not I should just keep battling through the pain.

So....my questions are, what does transitioning to formula involve? How long does it take? and how did you find it?
My little man is 3 months old, and I have really enjoyed breastfeeding

Hi Melopop,
I didnt want to read and run.
I don't have much advice sorry but BIG HUGS!
Does your little man drink EBM from a bottle? If so I guess you could mix breastmilk and formula in the bottle and slowly reduce the breastmilk while increasing the formula...?

Before you make any final decisions, please get a second opinion. Also try La Leche League - they have a medical liason person who will be in the know about whether this particular medication is actually your only option.

You could also try looking on the Medsafe website about whether it is totally contra-indicated for breastfeeding or whether there just isn't any real data available.

Good luck, I sincerely hope for the both of you that there is another alternative out there that will enable you to continue your breastfeeding relationship.

Formula often seems like a bad word, but if you really have to do it, it ain't that bad. I'd have rather BF but it wasn't to be, I fought for it for 4mths then after putting DS on formula full time - he was so much happier so yay! - but actually I missed it and wondered if I should have kept going. But really, I know DS was better off on the bottle.

Anyway, there's not so much info on FF out there but actually lots of mums do it. The standard recommendation is to swap one BF for one FF at a time. Then a few days later (some say a week's better) swap another BF for FF. So if you're feeding 6 times a day it's supposed to take up to 6 weeks.
In saying that however there are also drugs to dry up supply, and as for me I went from 10 BF a day, to 0 in under 1 week (my issue was supply and my body was only too happy to dry up)

Every now and then they'll be a thread on this forum which gives lots of helpful tips on FF. This is enough of a novel already so I'll leave it at that.

Good luck
