How many newborn all in ones and outfits would you buy. My first was just over 5lb so not sure with a regular sized baby how long they would wear them for

Thanks for your help

Gosh Nathan was only born 4mths ago but I can hardly remember. He was an average-sized baby and fit many of his newborn sizes for quite some time - maybe about 6-8wks? That time is such a blur I'm not sure exactly. I might have had about 5 All in one outfits.Plus other outfits - can't remember how many. I used the guidelines from the list that Babycity provide online (you can print it out) and there's also a list that is printed in the pregnancy book the GP gives you (forgotten the name of it - baby brain!!)

I got the basics and was given a lot of newborn and 0-3 outfits. I've heard that really big babies only last in newborn sizes for a couple of weeks, so I ended up buying a lot of 0-3 sizes worried that I wouldn't have enough clothes for him, but he lasted a while in newborn sizes. Believe it or not some of his newborn sizes were large and he still fits them now!

Bethany had very little in the newborn size because they said they don't fit it very long. In total we had maybe 2 long sleeve dome up singlets, 1 short sleeve woollen singlet, 1 nightgown and 2 AIOs. Oh and plenty of lil socks & 1 or 2 warm hats. Other than that, most of what we'd bought ahead was in the 0-3mth size and absolutely swam on her. (She was 4 days overdue but only 6lb13oz).

We coped fine with that, esp since once she was born my mum went out and bought about 3 outfits in pink that actually fitted her (some prem size even!) so we had plenty. The most important thing I found was having newborn sized singlets so at least one layer hugged her body a bit better to keep her warm. I did find that the newborn clothes fitted her until she was about 3mths old so I think we stocked up on a little more over time and were given some as gifts.

This time I've bought a few extra newborn singlets & an extra layer of pants/leggings for underneath AIOs etc. cuz it'll be the middle of winter. Other than that, I'll do the same again :-) Hope that helps? Have fun shopping!

i bought about three or four newborn outfits, and then was given 10. I think my four would have sufficed. with perhaps a cute cardy over the top for "going out"

The newborn stuff we had was:

4 singlets
3 sleepsuits (the dress like ones)
4 all in ones
11 bodysuits (the dome up under the nappy ones)

and some day outfits - but I'd say get max one of these to start with as the baby mainly sleeps so whatever is going to be comfy for sleeping in really.

That was more than enough - probably overboard with the bodysuits but they were mainly gifts. I probably wouldn't have wanted too much less than that though as sometimes we'd end up changing him 3x in one night if he peed everywhere!!

We had a big baby (9lb 12 oz) and he lasted about a month in newborn clothes. We found the baby factory stuff the smallest and he outgrew these the quickest - in fact I don't know if the sleepsuits ever went fully over his feet like they were supposed to!!

We had maybe 2 newborn sized AIOs and a tshirt and pants and everything else was 0-3 months. I was expecting to have a big baby (both DH and I were big and the scans all indicated that Alex would be too) so we concentrated on larger clothes. He was 4.65kg and didn't fit one of the outfits I had got for him to wear after he was born!

Also, Alex was a Summer baby, so he spent piles of time in a singlet and a nappy, or just a nappy. So there wasn't so much need for loads of clothes! He has also grown pretty quickly, so his 3-6 months clothes are just about too small, and I mainly have him in 6-12 month stuff.

And also worth mentioning is that if you use cloth nappies (like we do) then they're a wee bit more bulky than the disposables, and you'll need a bit more space in the AIOs (ie a larger size).

Jackson was just a little bub (6lb 5oz) so our NB stuff lasted just over 8 weeks. Im not a fan of AIO's so cant help there but we had about 8 vest singlets, 8 AIO singlets and about 10 pant and top outfits. I bought the outfits bulk off ebay hence the reason for so many. But it was good when he spilled over them, I didnt have to worry about if any were washed.

Our boy was 7lb15oz with is a bit bigger than average, but not huge. We has some 0000 stuff that didn't fit him on day one.
If I did it again I'd buy more all-in-ones with feet (4-6), More bodysuits (button crotch) (4-6), leggings with feet and bigger socks.

If you have the option, v-neck tops. I always found high neck tops/cardies would end up all scrunched up under his mouth.

I've got (what feels like) hundreds of hand knitted booties that he never wore - they'd never stay on him.

I think I might be the odd one out here, but for about the first 6 weeks I didn't bother with 'day clothes' they seemed like a hassle to me when all day was nappy changing and naps. He lived in all-in-ones.

Have fun! I'm just going to disagree about the AIO feet thing. I found that the outfits with feet didn't last long whereas the outfits without feet fit him much longer. Socks are a nuisance but it's better than wearing an outfit twice and that's it - and some of mine, that was the case because of it being weather-dependent and the feet thing.

Happy shopping!
