Topic: Expressing....how much?? Posted: 07 March 2010 at 7:51am |
How much do people manage to express? I have been expressing each night for the last week at approx same time (9-93.0 pm), which is about 1 1/2 - 2 hours after my 6 month olds last feed.
I never get more than approx 60 mls - 50 mls from one breast and 10 mls if I am lucky from the other. Should I be getting more?
My baby is waking every 2-3 hours at night, despite 5-6 breast feds a day and 3 solid meals, so am wondering if perhaps I am not producing enough again. I have milk supply issues and am on domerphone (sorry spelling) to help.
Cheers

That's a LOT of milk to get at night! I think your supply must be fairly good - I used to be able to express around 20-30mls at night, and I'm a great cow (still feeding my 19month old). There's a couple of threads on breastfeeding tips in the baby and toddler feeding section if you want a read too.

Yep that sound good. I can get like 150 in the morning, and about 40 in the evening.

What the others have said so far is pretty accurate, it seems to be more difficult for women to express at night and easier in the morning - but please remember not to use what you can express as a gauge of how much your baby is actually getting!
It's still pretty normal for a baby of that age to be waking in the night for a breastfeed, my DD2 is 7mos and we are still up 1-2x in the night for a quick feed.
You could try offering more frequently during the day perhaps?

I wish I could find the time to express! I never know when to do it and I can't really do it during the day as my nearly three year old would go nuts with touching and 'helping'. And the little one literally drains me every single feed, from both sides and I feed him 5-6 times a day and twice overnight so never seem to have any left for expressing. The time I did manage to express some, it got wasted anyway as my baby will NOT take a bottle, no way now how, he flat out refuses all of them. When expressing for my first child when he was really little I was getting 200mls +

Thanks for that, wasn't sure if it was guage or not. Find it difficult to express in the morning as well - Miss 2 1/2 wants her attention and off with her activities.

Sounds pretty good to me. I can only get about 60mls in the morning ven though my boobs are usually engorged. Remember the amount you express has no bearing on how much your baby is getting as a pump isn't as efficient as a babies sucking.
Renee - if you've got ice trays at home, try pouring the expressed milk into there and freeze it. Save it for when you start solids. I've got almost a whole trat full now. LOL I can't get Mac to take a bottle but DP can.

I was expressing til M was about 5 months at night and got 130-150mls most nights. With Jake I could get about 150mls/boob in the morning (300mls if I did both, but I didn't as he usually drank one) and 150mls at night in total. I must be a great cow!
