Topic: Young babies and sleep.... Posted: 16 December 2009 at 9:12pm |
How did you get your babies to sleep and stay asleep??
My baby will sleep in her bassinet sometimes but a lot of the time she just wakes up after a little while and won't settle again. I put her down asleep as she just screams and gets worked up really fast if i put her down awake. I won't leave her to cry.
She quite often has unsettled periods where she just keeps crying and no matter what we do she just won't settle for hours. Sometimes i think it's from overfeeding but if i don't feed her she just screams. She won't really take a dummy.
It's getting frustrating and tiring.

hey Hun,
This sounds JUST like how my Isabella was and still is sometimes, for weeks I didnt know what was wrong with her as nothing I did helped.
My husband said it might be reflux, but I brushed him off and said nah its not, until I read up about it and all of Isabella's symptoms pointed towards it, so we took her to the Dr, it took me seeing 3 different Dr's before the dicks would give me losec to try, well after losec she was a different baby! So it was/is reflux.
have a look at the crying over spilt milk website. But basically Bella hated lying on her back cried so hard and for ages, and randomly would start crying, spilled heaps(but the dont have to spill to have reflux), she often fussed at the breast and after a feed would cry and cry, and want to feed, but then fuss and cry etc
Its been so tiring, and by the time I got the losec I was well over it all, but the losec had made a huge difference, so could be worth looking into it.
*hugs*

Does Isabella like to suck your little finger??
Willow was a screamer for the first 4weeks. She also refused the dummy. We were given a neonatal dummy (its much the same as your little finger which Willow loved to suck on) which she took happily. She then started taking a normal dummy. So maybe the neonatal near you could let you have one to try??

Sheena makes some good points, though not having had a reflux baby myself I can't say for sure... worth having a look at however.
For the first eight weeks, we fed to sleep and then put her in the bassinette, which was within easy reach in the lounge.
Then, things changed and she would only sleep on me in a carrier (mei tai sling) for six weeks... though night sleeps were fine (in her own bed).
Now we are kind of in the middle of both, some day sleeps are in her bed and for these we feed to sleep, other sleeps are in the sling in which case she just nods off from the constant movement.
I think what I am trying to say, is that I have found babywearing to be invaluable... especially when I put her in bed but she only has a short sleep, she then gets tired again a lot faster and will only sleep on me.

I used to wear bella in my sling a lot when she was smaller as she only liked being upright, and it was great to have my hands still, with Caden running around!
So id definitely try her in a sling as well.

Thanks for the reply's.
I'm pretty sure she has got reflux. We're taking her to the doctors in the morning. She has all the signs of reflux. Kaelen had it too so i know all about it. He didn't scream for hours like she does though. She's getting worse. She screamed hysterically for hours last night and tonight.
I was really hoping she wouldn't get it. It's awful. I feel so sorry for her. Things are actually worse than they were with Kaelen. Everyone says things are so much easier with 2nd babies, well it's not when the baby has reflux.
I just hope the doctor will prescribe something that will help. Gaviscon did nothing for Kaelen. He just threw it all back up. He was prescribed Losec after that which helped a bit.
I've tried putting her in the wrap but she hates it, she just squirms and cries. I'll try her in the sling next. Hopefully she'll like that better. She screamed when i took her for a walk in her pushchair today too. Reflux babies are such hard work. I'm so tired.

Thanks kabe. Things have really gone downhill the last few days. Kaelen suddenly got bad at 3 weeks too.

Eva was a shocker with sleep for the first 3 months too, so I can relate to the exhaustion. It's what puts me off having #2! Knowing what I know now, I think she had a sore tummy due to her (not yet diagnosed) dairy & soy allergy
Let us know how you get on

I had Cooper in a rocker & would rock him to sleep during the day with my foot while either surfing the net or watching tv.

Been to the docs. She's been put on 10mg of Losec. The doctor was good. She actually listened to me and didn't have a problem with prescribing it.
So hopefully we'll see a difference soon. She screamed from 7-11 last night. Poor thing, it was horrible. She would start to settle then just start screaming again. I took her to bed at 11 and fed her and she finally fell asleep. We actually had a pretty good sleep.
I'm gonna try cutting a lot out of my diet too to see if that helps.

Yay that's great the Dr's didn't dick around and got her on losec right away!
Wish my stupid Dr's had of prescribed it right from when I first took Bella to the Dr at 9 weeks old. Instead i had endure weeks and weeks of the screaming and unsettledness
My Isabella is on 10mg a day too. Are you doing it in 2 doses? Like 5mg am and 5mg pm? thats how we are doing it.

Yeah that sucks that the Dr's did that to you. I've heard that there are a lot that are useless when it comes to reflux.
We gave her the whole 10mg at once but i was actually thinking about splitting like you said. Do you think it works better that way?

Can midwives prescribe losec? Our backup midwife casually said Cooper might have reflux, but then that's all she said. Some of the things you guys are describing sounds like him.

Hi chelle.
You'd have to take him to your GP to get something prescribed. Have a look at this site, it tells you all about reflux. www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz.
