How much is normal?

Sometimes after a nap my daughter wakes up with a streak of it across her cheek running from her ear, when I clean (the outside) of her ears I'll use one cotton bud to get her left ear clean, and go through 3 or 4 on the right ear. And within a few hours, it's all around the outside of the canal again. I've asked my doctor to check it and he says it's fine, I've had the trainee doctor (can't remember the word for them) check them too and she says they're fine. But I've never seen other kids with wax like it, and it's only one ear....

No idea... maybe JJ is abnormal in the other direction but I've never cleaned his ears at all and have never seen any sort of ear wax buildup. A streak of it across her cheek after a nap sounds like a lot, that said there's probably a wide range of what's considered normal, just one of those things (Hayzie or Emma might have a better idea?)

It is a lot of earwax!!!! Thanks for the thoughts Weegee. I thought I'd ask on here because I know we have a collection of mum's who have ear issues with bubs. I think the left ear is "normal" I never look at it and think "oh gosh, that's grotty" but the right ear is beyond a joke, it's not a sometimes clean, it's a wipe her cheek and earlobe etc with a warm flannel at least once a day.

We've had numerous ear infections and Jack has narrow ear canals (one not so nice thing he inherited from his father). I clean his right ear out twice a week but it only takes from morning to night to be visible. A streak across the cheek sounds like a lot but better out than in!

By the way, you shouldn't use cotton buds (noone should) as it just pushes the wax back in the ear. If anything, use a bobby pin or a special ear thingy (which is basically an expensive bobby pin from the chemist) as they're hollow so allow you to get the wax without pushing stuff back into the ear.

Is she happy enough or do you think she's in pain?

I don't use cotton buds in the ear, I use them to clean around the ear canal IYKWIM as my nails are long and I don't want to scratch her little ears. I don't think she is in pain (it's very hard to tell with her because she is such a happy wee poppit), but I do wonder....
