Ashley is 8 weeks and has her big sisters cold :(

Gabrielle didnt' get sick at all until she was about 16 months old so this sick baby thing is new to me.

Ashley just has a cough and a snuffly nose. No discernable fever. I am aslo developing the bug and hene know it comes with a sore throat.

What do you do when you baby is sick re: naps etc? She has always settled brilliantly but for the last couple of days is very hard to settle and seems to want to be with me. She is relatively content and will sleep on me but in her bed just drifts on and off for 5 or 10mins at at time crying in between or doesn't settle at all rather than her usual 2 hour naps. She was feeding very frequently for a couple of days but seems to be settling back to 3 hourly.

Do you worry about creating bad habits or just do what works for a few days?

I would go with what works for now, I am sure they say they don't form habits till approx 3 months and habits are always easier to break when they are so little anyway. I know how miserable I can feel with a cold so I am sure little ones feel so much worse (except for a man with man flu of course ) and so doing anything that makes them feel better would be the way I would go.

My DD is nearly 10 months old and has just had her first cold and then another almost straight afterwards (I had it at the same time as well). I went with whatever kept her happy and comfortable. One thing I found really helped was a vapouriser & once we could no longer borrow that we used a crockpot with the lid off and a bit of vicks in it, don't know if this is okay for such a young baby but worked wonders for DD's breathing at night.

Hope she gets better soon and you do too.

Definitely do what works. I am currently going through this (3 months of it ). Tom had his first ear infection at 2 years. James has had 3 months of cold after cold after ear infection after conjunctivitis and I am sure a bit of teething too).

It helps when you get the bug and know how it feels. If I was a baby I would want my mummy constantly too. In fact when I am sick now, I would love to be cuddled constantly and fed on demand.

Ava got her first cold at abour 1 or 2 weeks old I think it was and was only sleeping 2 hours the whole night and screaming the rest (coincided with reflux tho).

I just did whatever, made sure the head of the bed was raised, that she was warm and put saline drops in her nose to make her sneeze before every feed. She dropped down to 20-30ml per feed (was having 60-80 at that stage) and was just really groggy so I was a bit worried as I was on my own.

The joys of having daycare kids as well eh?!

(And I swear by the saline drops, 1tsp of salt in cooled boiled water, then syringe 2-3 drops into each nostril before a feed, squeeze her nose and try to get her to sneeze)

ETA: sorry, re the sleeping thing I wouldn't worry, just do what works. She may find sleeping with you at night more reassuring. Bad habits won't be formed, they don't start forming til at least 5 months.
