Topic: do day sleeps impact on night sleeps? Posted: 30 September 2009 at 4:03pm |
I'm curious to know people's views...
If a baby sleeps too much during the day, does that impact on how much s/he sleeps at night? Or is the saying that good day sleeps result in better night sleeps true?
My 7 week old can't really stay awake more than an hour to 90 minutes at a time without getting overtired... BUT yesterday when he was up for 9 hours straight he slept for 6.5 at night which was a record.
He generally naps for 2 - 3 hours max during his day sleeps. I guess I don't know whether to wake him regularly or just leave him to it if he obviously needs the sleep.
Would love to hear what others think...

I have always found JJ sleeps better at night when he slept well during the day. That said, I have also always found that he sleeps better at night when he feeds well during the day. At 7 weeks if bubs is sleeping for 2-3 hours max it's possible he's not getting the 8-12 feeds he needs in 24 hours so you may need to wake him to feed him, sorry! Otherwise he will wake at night because he's hungry. (Although they sometimes will crash hard if they're really overtired - 9 hours is a really long stretch.)
I should add I never woke my baby but then I was always confident he was getting enough - every baby is different. JJ was only up for 60-90 minutes max for months and months too.
I should also add not to expect bubs to sleep more than a 4-5 hour stretch at night just yet

Sleep definately promotes sleep!
At 7 weeks they should be up for about an hour and down for about 2 hours as a guide. I dont think they can sleep too much during the day.... but there is always and exception.
Not surprised he slept so long last night, he must have been exhausted!!! Jake was doing all dayers around that age, it was very frustrating.
Those day naps sound great! I was told to wake Jake by plunket but after a couple of weeks I stopped waking him and let him do is own thing... he slept much better once I stopped waking so I am now in the "never wake a sleeping baby" camp.

I find in the long run better sleep during the day = better sleep at night. Sometimes of course when they are just knackered of course they are going to sleep well that night though, but it turns to crap after more than a day or two of it.

i dont think it matters..............ty is a bad sleeper doesnt matter how many naps he has or doesnt have and for how long he sleeps for xactly the same amount of time at night...........obviously if i put him down in afternoon too late then i have trouble putting him to sleep at the same time at night......my daughter sleeps alot but only for 2 hrs max and sleeps all night

I find that if H is in a good pattern of eating and sleeping during the day, he will sleep much better at night. Also, if he is overtired, he naps for 45 min and wakes up crying and then nights are more unsettled as well. At 7 weeks he was up for 1 hour max, and then slept for 2 hours.

I think the general rule is sleep breeds sleep BUT there are exceptions. Some babies get so tired in the day they sleep well at night. That level of overtiredness may not be ideal but for some it works. If you try everything and your baby won't nap well then there comes a point of just accepting that and being happy with the good nights I think. Every baby is different As a baby I was awake most of the day (happily so) and slept great at night. On the other hand. Ashley is a dream napper but sleeps poorly at night LOL - just goes to show...we are all different.

If E missed a sleep he was a nightmare at night so for him good day sleep meant good night sleep.

Day sleeps DEFINITELY make a difference here. The more the better. Tom could survive a few days with bad day sleeps but then it all turned to custard and James seems to be the same.
Do whatever it takes to get day sleeps in...and food!
Both mine couldnt last more than 90 min either.....in fact 45min was a common wake time.

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely didn't try to keep Alex up for nine hours the other day - we just couldn't get him down but I think in retrospect he wasn't well.
Anyhow, we're commencing project day-sleeps. I had been worried that if he slept too much during the day he wouldn't at night and read that they shouldn't sleep for more than 5 hours in the day so interesting to hear everyone's feedback.

Jake couldn't sleep during the day for the first couple of months coz of severe reflux so he was sleeping ages at night out of sheer exhaustion poor bub. Once we got his meds sorted he started having naps during the day and had a few upset nights readjusting his pattern but then ended up settling straight into about 8-9 hours at night by 9 weeks and 3-4 2 hour naps during the day. We were using a routine so I did wake him up from his naps which worked great for us but different strokes for different folks. Right up til he turned 2 his nights were disturbed if he didn't get atleast one nap during the day.
