Topic: Domperidone - advice, info please Posted: 29 September 2009 at 6:51pm |
Hi Ladies,
Can anyone share experience with domperidone? Dosage, side effects, safety and results?
My Dr has given me the script to use if I want it, he doesn't know the dose and treatment to get my prolactin up, I have seen a treatment plan online but wondering what other people have had results with.
My DD is 10wks old, we have tried all the herbs, teas, homeopathics, an LC etc etc she doesn't latch as well as she could so I normally feed her as long as I can then express milk for her. She is very lazy on the boob (because I have never had enough milk and she got bottles from very early on)
I'm basically thinking about taking it as a last resort to increase supply.
Any advice on it appreciated!

my milk never came in. i was on the max dose and was getting a tiny bit of milk and could expres maybe 150ml per day? i forgot to take them for one day and my milk dried up strait away. if you have a supply to start with, even a small one then they will probably be good and atleast worth a try?? no side effects for me, and at this stage i havent heard of anyone who has had any but im sure someone will know someone if that makes sense. lol

Hi skp, my midwife put me on Domperidone to increase my milk. I started off on one tablet (10mg) four times a day (on an empty stomach) but increased it to two tablets every four hours as my supply hadn't increased as well as it should have. The only side effect I think I had were slight headaches, but I also had 3 epi's (2 failed) and the headaches could have been a side effect of that....
Have you also tried tigers milk? I found it also helped in addition to the lactation tea I was also drinking.
Goodluck, hope all goes well for you.

I had it from when dd was 2 weeks. I think it was 2 pills 3 times daily. I noticed results after about 3 days.i was advised to wean off it- so i think i went to 1 pill 3 times a day in order to come off them.
I still never felt i had enough- so started a bottle before bed when she was 6 weeks- i think it was more to do with her being a really slow feeder and me getting too tired.
good luck

I had a terrible time for my second child and because of this was on a huge amount of drugs and domperidone was one of them. It worked for me and 8 months later still feeding!!!! DD has always from day one had formula as well and happily switches from one to other no problem. Good luck hope it all works out for you

I'm on Domperidone, 2 tablets 3 times a day (so 20mg 3x daily). I was struggling to get 50ml total each time I expressed when the girls were around 3 weeks old, and within 3 days noticed the difference. I now consistently get between 80-100ml total each time I express (which is when the girls feed), and sometimes up to 130-160ml. My girls are on alternate breast milk and formula feeds, as i don't produce enough for both, and the Domperidone has helped me supply enough for one full breast feed for one of them at each feed.
The girls happily switch between breast milk and formula.

I've been taking it for months now, started on 90mg a day, now down to 70mg and will continue to wean myself off. It was the only thing that helped as my supply was shocking. It's still not ideal, in that H is about 50-50 BF and FF but it's better than nothing. Dr Jack Newman's website has a heap of really useful info : www.drjacknewman.com .

Kind of off topic, I was prescribed this drug to try and curb my morning sickness. It was suggested by the woman at MMH, yet the locum I saw seemed sceptical about prescibing it, then again she seemed sceptical about prescibing anything for the MS.

Also I was prescribed 100 10mg tablets - taking 6 per day thats 16 days of treatment @ $22 a script. Is there somewhere you can buy them cheaper? online maybe?

MM - it's actually an anti-nausea drug, its just that one of the side effects is an increase in prolactin - hence why it is used for milk supply.
skp that is expensive - I paid $18.70 for 180 tablets, which is 30 days worth. That was on prescription from the paeds at the hospital.

skp, who wrote your script? If it's a dr, make sure they are associated with a PHO or do it on a hospital script pad - then you'll get the subsidised prices. If it's a midwife, have a chat to her about the cost and see what she can do because that seems expensive.
They give domperidone to prem babies, so I guess the effect of it on bub is minimal, and also as far as I know the amount that gets through breast milk is tiny.

Some pharmacies are more expensive than others eg. Life. My local pharmacy charged about $7 for 100.
