My favorite book would have to be "what to expect when you're expecting" & then for when the baby comes "What to expect the first year"

Sorry Odette, just got to say I've had so many people including my MW warn me away from that book.
Isabel, grab a Bounty pack from Anete. That has everything in you need to know. Week by week break downs, awesome food lists (what to eat and what not to eat) plus lists for baby. Also got to the babycity or baby factory websites (baby factory has a better list) and they have layette lists on them.
A good book to read (but not necessary) is "Up the Duff" by Kaz Cooke. It is absolutely hilarious. Gives you a humerous yet honest outlook on pregnancy. If nothing else it's great for a giggle.
It's an individual decision about reading books but I opted not to cause I don't want to get caught up in any horror stories. Ignorance is bliss for me and I'm happy to go through my pregnancy just taking it as it comes and knowing that my body will do what it needs to do to keep me and my baby going. And if I'm ever worried, OhBaby or my MW are there to help.
But then thats just me.

NZ pregnancy, a guide to pregnancy in New Zealand is a great one. I think I enjoyed what to expect when your expecting the most though. I have heard other people bag it but I liked how every month it gave you a huge description on the changes in the baby and in you. Also pictures of what the baby would look like that month. It also covers what to take to hospital all the basics. Obviously it's not an NZ book though so you have to take some things with a grain of salt. I wouldn't pay much attention to the medical care side of things in that book because we have our own way of birthing in NZ.
But mostly I agree with Carin. Plunket will give you heaps of info and the bounty pack is great. Not to mention anti-natal classes and the miles of info and hand outs your LMC will give you. I have always been anti pregnancy and child raising books (the two I mentioned were a gift when I was pregnant) They all conflict with each other. Plus unless they are specifically NZ written they don't cover much thats useful to you. My midwife gave my a basic list of everything I would need in hospital and at home.

I have the NZ Pregnancy guide book and have found it great. I also got a book on breastfeeding - can't remember what its called but it has been fantastic, have finished it now but will re-read it closer to the time.
Mum also gave me a book she read when pregnant with us - Baby & Child which is really good. Covers things like swaddling, bathing etc etc, from birth to toddlers.
I'm the type that researchs everything, so I've found these books great for that. Unlike Carin I like to know all possibiilties and eventualities first and pre-prepare myself.
Depends what type of person you are and what information your after I guess

I read a few but I really enjoyed "What to expect when your expecting" but the NZ and AUS Edition. DH read "So your going to be a Dad" by Peter Downey which was written by a dad for dads and he loved it.
Also online web sites are great resources too. You should sign up to some weekly emails as they also have great information

I'd just go with the books in the bounty pack and up the duff if you want a humourous read.

I remember reading a pregnancy book from the 70s that my ex MIL had in her bookshelf.
It said I was allowed to have no more than about 5 smokes a day and no more than 1-2 glasses of wine per week.
Oh and I should expect to stay in hospital for two weeks after the baby and not move around at all and let the nuns or whoever take care of the baby and they would bring it in for feeding.

I also have the NZ & Aus edition of What to Expect When Expecting and have really enjoyed reading it. The books with the bounty pack have definitely been helpful aswell.
