Since Jody cut her top 2 teeth, BFing on one side has hurt and it's only getting worse. I have tried to adjust her in hope she will adjust her latch, tried different positions etc but just one nipple is in so much pain, I dread feeding off that side and want to stop BFing although I have always had a goal of 1yr and it's oh so close now!
She cut those teeth over a month ago so I don't think it's going to get any better
Has anyone tried nipple shields with an older baby?? I used them for a wee while when she was newborn but I'm not sure how she'd go with them now.
Any other advice from you lovely ladies??
TIA

Hi my baby is the same age as yours and i have just gone through the exact same thing. I think my right nipple was maybe grazed by an emerging tooth (when they are all pointy when they first come through) and it HURT SO MUCH all the time - when feeding and just walking around between feeds. I also tried adjusting the latch and taking the baby on and off to re-latch but that just made it more painful. It was back to those toe-digging-into-the-floor-days of when first breastfeeding. (and constantly examining nipple for marks - which made me realize how little i had paid attention to my nipples before cos i couldn't tell if any of the wee marks were new or had always been there.     But i digress...)

I was the same - i was certain it wouldn't get any better. Solution was digging out the Lansinoh and using it 50,000 times per day. I didn't think it would work cos it took well over a week to make a difference, but all good now. I have never tried nipple shields so don't know if they would work or not. Sorry - this novella probably doesn't help much. But hang in there - it will get better and you'll feed on til she's 2.

I tried using them when Jae was a few days old to no avail... but I sat down at around 6-7 weeks and thought that if she could take a bottle without problems, then nipple shields might work as they have that same 'rubbery' feel to them... sure enough she goes on fine with them, although I dont see us being able to stop using them anytime soon as she refuses to latch without!

My rambling was more of an idea that if Jody takes a bottle now and then, she may be receptive towards nipple shields as both teats and shields are made of silicone...?

Lydia noticed the nipple shield straight away, and being plastic and all, bit it! Right through onto my burned and cracked nipple with her little tiny razor teeth. She doesn't bite normally, but as soon as the plastic went in, she thought it was a good chew toy. Just something to bear in mind...

I still use nipple sheilds with my 6 month old, I had to use them as Samantha is a little baby and I have big breasts but little nipples (sorry tmi) so she couldn't realy latch on to anything. She feeds well with them and I don't express to keep my milk supply up as it is fine. The sad thing is I will prob have to keep using them until I stop breast feeding altogether as she doesn't know how to latch without them and even sucks differently than if she was straight onto the breast.
She hasn't got teeth yet so not sure how that will go. The annoying thing is she keeps pulling it off and plays with it!

Thanks for the advice ladies I went and got some shields yesterday morning and she was very unimpressed. I fed her normally until a letdown and then tried the shield which worked for a few seconds until I got bitten. She reluctently takes a bottle once a week but only because I'm not with her.
I also managed to hold her in a rugby hold positions (not easy with a big bubba lol) and that seemed to help.).
Daizy I have found some of that cocoa butter nipple creme stuff so I will use that 50,000 times a day and wait a week. And feed until she's 2
Thank you all so much for your replies!
Also, happy half birthday Samantha

Hehe, I found the cream in my wardrobe. But they do have the bottom butter stuff here in big tubes so I presume they would have the nipple stuff too. I just haven't been paying attention to the 'sore nipple' area in the pharmacy. I shall find prices and PM you
