Corban is 11 weeks old and fully breastfed on demand. He has reflux and is on gaviscon and ranitidine (just in case that's relevant). In the last week he has stretched his day time feeds out to 4hrly but continues to BF 4hrly overnight. Very occasionally he will go 5hrs. He has a bath and goes to bed between 6.30-7pm and depending on how well he settles I will wake him at 10.30ish to feed before I go to bed, if he has taken a few hours to settle I don't wake him and he will usually sleep through until around 1am.

Not really sure what I'm asking?? maybe just after opinions... I don't expect him to sleep through the night but are wondering if he is waking out of habit rather than hunger - or is he too young for that??

Also lately he has been mucking about a lot with his feeds, latching off and on, pushing me away and having really short feeds (like 5mins) that I'm not convinced he is having enough although he will still go 4hrs between feeds. Is this a developmental stage? He doesn't look up and smile at me so someone said it's more likely to do with his reflux causing him discomfort??

Help!

I BF til 3 months when I finally had enough of our problems (so can't really help with the mucking about as I got fed up with that) but Daniel was never one of those babies that started sleeping through young. He was waking that often as well and had silent reflux. I came to the realisation that he will sleep for longer at night when hes ready and over time the time between feeds did lengthen out. He never looked up at me when feeding either. I guess that's not all that helpful except to say that your little guy isn't unusual in what hes doing

Sounds like you're already doing a dreamfeed some nights (although you shouldn't need to wake bubs to do a dremfeed), that was what got my DD sleeping for longer stretches. I would cluster feed from about 4:30pm, feed before bed at around 7pm, dreamfeed at around 10:30pm/11pm then she would sleep until about 4/5am and by 16 weeks that became 6am. All babies are different though - and it's completely normal for a baby to wake hungry in the night, I think it's after they are 6 months old that it becomes more about habit than hunger.

Yeah we're still seeing 2.30am here, we are BF on demand mostly, I am making him wake & have feed now at 10.30pm. When he was Corban's age it didn't make a jot of difference, he'd still wake at around 2.30am just probably slightly later. Now if I feed him it will stretch him out to 6am.

The mucking around will be an age thing.

Feel his tummy, if it's full after 5 mins then he's probably had a good drink. Cooper only feeds for 5 mins as well & my boob gets drained.

I find with the reflux to sit him straight up & pop the dummy in while I burp him. Helps keep everything down.

You're doing well
Kel

i breastfeed on demand and henry didnt start sleeping through until 6months. And in the first 4months he fed 3hourly day or night. at 4months he went down to just waking once . Henry also had reflux and on omeprazole (i think that was it anyway - preggy brain sorry). We gave him a dummy to help with the burning in his throat at 4wks because he was wanting to suck all the time. This probably doesnt make you feel any better sorry hun. I just assumed it was what breastfeeding on demand meant (day or night when they wanted it) and figured it would stop when he was ready.

I seem to remember my baby going through something similar at that age (she is now 6 months old). We think she had a bit of reflux cos she was definitely hungry (showing all the signs) but would start crying when I tried to feed her. In the end I tried to space out her feeds a bit more (I was feeding probably more often than I needed to, which doesn't apply to you) and also changed my feeding position - I was using a pillow and laying her down on it to feed, but I stopped using the pillow and fed her more upright, which I think helped to keep everything down. I am still dream feeding my baby (won't last for too much longer I think) but I have to wake her, otherwise she is too sleepy to eat. Now I think my baby will do both sides in just over 10 mins at a normal feed, so perhaps your baby is actually more efficient than you think?? Also I wonder if you should feed more often than 4 hourly? (I suppose if he won't feed you can't force him though....) Even though my baby is now 6 months old, most of the time she feeds around every 3 hours, so is there any possibility that by him feeding only every 4 hours that you are not making as much milk, and so he is getting it out more efficiently, and then he is still hungry in the night because he hasn't had enough during the day? I just think that I would never go for 4 hours without even having a snack, so why should my baby, IMO....
But also I know my baby went through a period of distracted feeding - really frustrating! So I guess you just have to keep up the feeding and eventually you will get past the problems. Don't give up cos I am glad I am still breastfeeding now!
My baby slept through from 10-ish until 7 when she was around 3 months I think, but she still woke up occasionally, and even now sometimes she wakes up, not necessarily because she is hungry. I hope that helps

I'm no expert, but I do BF on demand (and have always).

4 hourly feeding is just fine - my girl would feed 2-3 hourly during the day and 4 hourly overnight at that age.

At 11 weeks he may be mucking about a bit because of being more aware of the surrondings - have you tried going somewhere quiet to feed?

Only feeding for 5 minutes is a good thing, it means that he has perfected efficient feeding and doesn't need to feed as long to get the amount of milk he needs.

It sounds like you're doing really well!

H does this sometimes - for us its one of two things, either he has bad wind and needs lots of burping or my supply is low.

With the sleeping thing, according to my Plunket nurse babies have one long sleep a day; if you interrupt it they go back to feeding every 3-4 hours. So now he goes to bed around 7pm and had a dreamfeed at 10.30, but we don't wake him up. H won't go on the boob asleep though but will take a bottle so he gets either EMB or formula or a mixture of the two! Usually has between 120-200mls and sleeps to around 4am.

Good luck hun x

my girl does that but its cause my flow is too fast for her so she does that to slow it down..........it may also be that he is just not hungry

I have BF on demand since day 1.

At that age my DD had more feeds during the day. Have you tried to get him feeding more??

Also around that age is when they start getting distracted, I will attach a link about it, its a very helpful site and has alot of BFing answers too
