Topic: Toilet Training Posted: 05 June 2006 at 9:30pm |
Once again, I am far too lazy to look for books or articles on the subject and to be honest, would prefer the infinite wisdom of your experience!
How the heck do you go about toilet training?
Does everyone wait until the child recognises when they need to go, or do you just need to make the leap and they learn about the sensations as they go??
In the last week Hannah has got really interested in the toilet, and after working out the potty thing, has decided she is a big kid and wants to sit on the toilet. More often than not she will actually do something on it, I think she did wees 3 times yesterday. (Including the second time when she tried to climb on the toilet herself... could have been truly disastrous... small bottom + big toilet... I shudder to think.)
Anyway... I'm not really thinking about TT Hannah yet, especially because creche doesn't deal very well with TT, but would like to hear your stories.

Winter is a bit of a bi#ch time to start TT. I found it so much easier in summer. Less stress and easier to clean up messes etc.
But then again if she is actually going on the toilet maybe she is ready. Wow that is so great. Maybe just let her guide you like your doing now. Put her on the toilet when she wants too but leave her in nappies the rest of the time.

Arna has just turned two and I am thinking about TT her but it just seems so much like a mission!!!
Think I am going to have to bite the bullet and do it... except she likes to stand in her potty instead of sitting on it.

Wow, go Hannah! I'm like you, wanting to find out more info but too lazy to look it up Ella is showing an interest too, but likes to take her potty around the house and then when i go to take it away she insists she needs to do something on it (usually when we're in a hurry to go somewhere).

Kobe started showing interest in the toilet last week, as I was about to walk out the door to meet a friend for coffee he suddenly said go toilet, so not wanting to discourage this sat him on there and waited and waited, got hubby to take over and about half an hour later he got off but had done nothing. Since then he has figured out how to do wees on the toilet but so far no poos although he has tried but he has been constipated so that didnt help. Ive been trying to put him in undies as much as possible but Im not really sure he is ready yet because unless we remind him he forgets, although only 3 accidents today so thats probably not to bad. Luckily his preschool are pretty good with tt so will see how he goes tomorrow. We brought a special seat with a ladder attached that he can climb up and he gets some "special lollies" when he goes but soon will start a star chart, it was more that I was taken unawares and didnt think he was ready for tt. Now its a bit of a pain though cos whenever i say im going he runs in to "his toilet" and has to go first, also he loves brushing his teeth on the toilet, not sure if thats particularly hygenic but it keeps him on there for a while. Good luck with Hannah

Wow, go Hannah! Now Jake will have to do something equally cool to ctatch up. I have no idea how to go about TTin. At the moment jake likes to "observe" people on the loo (my mother's boyfriend gets a bit freaked), and sometimes helps by getting the paper. If he's very adventerous he will try and have a little look, but I try and discourage thins as I think it's creepy. I read however, that you should let your child observe your "toiletings" by leaving the door open and such. I feel that toilet is MY TIME! and doesn't need little hleping hands. But thats just me.

Yeah, I get no peace in the toilet Can't wait until we move into a house where she can't reach the door handles. Or has the sense to wait until I get out.
I think I'm going to just keep going as I am for a while until I get seriously motivated and it's a bit warmer.
She's started to say "No" to wanting to go on the toilet, I don't know whether it's because she's getting annoyed with me putting her on there or because she doesn't want to go. Will test that theory this afternoon I think.
It's kinda fun and definitely a help not to have to go through so many damn nappies!!!
She hasn't done poos on the toilet in a while... but I think that is more because I haven't put her on at the time she needed to go. She tries her darndest though!!! (hehehe the straining is so cute!)

Oh, and I need to get a seat! It's such a pain trying to hold her steady while I reach right up to get the toilet paper (which is up very high because of an obsession with pulling out whole rolls)! I've almost dropped her quite a few times

I have half heartedly tried with the boys but have had a couple of set backs. eegs started really well but then got sick with the runs so that stopped that then we got back into it but ow he freaks sitting on the toilet. I think I will wait until we move as the toilet here is out in the wash house - one of those old villa type wash houses so its cold and a long way to go for a little one holding on. We do the undie thing in the arvos though which seems to work out ok. Good luck to all us TTin mums and bubs

I think Hannah hates the toilet now.
Will give it a rest before she refuses altogether!!!!
Though she did do poos on the potty today and wees in the toilet at Junglerama... but that was only because it was a kid sized toilet and she was so excited.
Damn it. Overkill on the TT too early isn't good.

Haha hopefully *fingers crossed* Arna is TT by Thursday!! Grandma (davids mum) has taken her back up to Hamilton to stay until Thursday so she has 3 days to TT my lovely daughter!! If she teaches her to SIT on the potty instead of stand IN in then that will be a start!!
Nikki - at least she knows what the toilet is... this may sound strange but what about buying one of those baby seat things and getting her to read a book or something while she is on it?! (I can talk - haven't done ANYTHING like that!!)
Good Luck for all us TT Mums!!

Nikki, Jake says "nah" to everything at the moment, but doesn't really know what he's talking about. maybe it's just that!
"did you have a nice day at daycare?"
"nah"
"do you love Mummy"
"nah"

I went abit overboard with the potties cos they are so cute, I have two potties and two toilet seats but then we have two toilets so its handy to keep one in each. We brought Kobe this really cool seat that has a ladder attached and wee handles so when he needs to go he can grab it and put it on then climb up (with a little help ofcourse) he reads or brushes his teeth on the toilet but man are we going through toilet paper at the moment! Thankfully his preschool are really really good about toilet training and give heaps of hints and are willing to keep asking if they need ot go to the toilet so that helps. I bet once this baby is born though all this hard work will go "down the toilet" excuse the pun

I try to give Hannah things to play with or books to read when she is on the toilet but then she forgets to try to go!
I will buy a little seat sometime soon, I'm too lazy atm. I think it'll be good as our toilet seat is freeeeeeezing and hopefully plastic won't be so damn cold to sit on!!!
Liz.. Hannah has had a huge "nah" day today... complete with whinging tone. It is driving me nuts. The "nah" for the toilet is screeched at the top of her lungs so I think she really means it this time . (But yeah, "nah" is a favourite.. trying to replace it with "YES" but not doing very well at all. )

Still saying "nah" to absolutely freaking everything.
She had creche today for 8 hours so I didn't see her (Welcome break from the demon child) and she's in again tomorrow so there will be no development on the toilet front. Maybe the weekend will bring a more co-operative child?!?!
On another note... Han was exhausted yesterday (the whingiest and most teary that I have seen her in a loooooooooooong time!) so I put her to bed early (about 6.40 when she usually goes to bed at 7.30pm) and fully expected her to either be out of bed and wide awake at 10pm or decide that it was morning time at 5am... but the little monkey slept until 7.30am! Must have needed the catch up sleep. Unfortunately that meant I was late to uni but who am I to say no to a sleep in?!?!

hehe, Maya slept in until 9am this morning, I finally got her to daycare at 11.30am. We just got back from Oz tho so i think she's still catching up.
In all honesty, she TT herself. She took her nappy off at 22 mths and tried to climb on the toilet and that was that. I got a step, and a cheap plastic seatfrom Farmers. I just found I had to remind her to go or she wouldn't think about it, and I still do have to remind her when she is busy playing or else she will leave her run to late and end up weeing on the floor in fornt of the toilet coz she can't get her knickers off fast enough!
