Mine went like this...
Met midwife at hospital at 7am. Monitored for an hour, then examined and didn't need gel because I was 3cm dilated already so had waters broken and walked around for an hour to try to get things moving. Things didn't start moving so they started me on the oxytocin drip (or syntocin or whatever the synthetic oxytocin is called), contractions started pretty quickly and were 1 min apart and very painful by the time I was examined 4 hours later, and found was only 4cm dilated. Had an epidural and the oxytocin was turned up, an hour later was 8cm dilated, had him 2.5 hours later I think.

This was my first baby so I have nothing to compare it to, but contractions came on pretty quickly and were pretty painful so I'm glad I had the epidural (on my midwife's recommendation) before they upped the drugs (which obviously would've made the contractions worse).

All in all I think it went pretty well, and I wouldn't be worried if I had to be induced again (would obviously prefer to go into labour naturally but I wouldn't stress if I needed to be induced).

Good luck, you will be fine

i was induced at 41+5.

Cervix tight and shut. Heart monitor on. MW has a good feel round the cervix - oucie. Gel inserted. Stayed on monitor for 1 hour. Then got up and could wander round. Heart monitor every 4 hours for one hour wound the clock. Gel inserted twice a day. Day 4, cervix finally 1 cm. Waters broken. Didn't start contractions. Synto in - started contractions. Epi inserted after 1/2 an hour. Baby born 12 hours later.

I'd recommend checking what your LMC's role is - mine didn't make any contact with me - she felt it was the role of the hospital team to manage me till I went into labour. She only came in on day 4 once I was dilating. Pissed me right off.

Hi I was induced after 10 days overdue as the baby was nowhere near ready to come! I went into hospital on the 6th Feb(was due on the 28thJan) and was hooked up to the fetal heart monitor and the midwife did an internal. I was only 1cm dilated so instead of applying the gel and labouring over night I was sent home and went back at 8am the next morning.
The midwife broke my waters in the morning and things progressed from there. It was all pretty medical in the end as I then needed an epidural as the contractions were coming thick and fast with no break in between and I wasn't dilating quickly enough. Being my first baby and having nothing to compare it too I'm not sure how bad the contractions are but these seemed really strong really quickly I ended up having a ventouse delivery but that was due more to a distressed baby rather than the induction.
The whole thing was very "managed" but the result was fantastic in the end.
All the best for Wednesday

Have been induced with both mine and would do it again! (Not that I plan to have anymore)

First birth - waters broken and drip started 6 hours later - labour 6hrs and then pushing for 2hrs. Pethidine only, stitches

Second - Gel, waters broken 6hrs later, then drip started 4hrs after that. Baby 4hrs later, 4 minutes pushing. No drugs and no stitches.

So I think it might be quite different depending on the person - but I found it all good.

Hi, mine was slightly different in that I was only 37 weeks, but my hind waters had broken. So I went into hospital and had the gel on my cervix at 8am. Had contractions about 5mins apart after that but they didn't hurt much. At 2pm I was only 2cm dilated but my cervix was thinned so they broke the front membrane of water, which brought labour on hard and fast. Just after 5pm I felt the urge to push. I was checked and found to be 9cm dilated, and was told to push when I felt the urge. 17mins later she was born

I was11 days overdue and asked to get induced despite mw & dr's advice that i should wait it out and let it happen naturally. (I tried acupuncture but that didn't work for me--they said the baby has to be in the right position for it to work and it only works sometimes). I then went to the ob/gyn to have things checked down there and she said that I was having a small baby. She booked me in for the induction to happen on Wed night.

I came on Wed night. They checked for my cervix so they could apply the gel in the right spot. I had a couple ladies searching for it (really weird!) and it hurt quite a bit. After about 15 mins of poking and prodding they found it, inserted it around 11. I was told they'd probably have to do a repeat after 6 hrs cuz it frequently doesn't work the first time around. They hooked me up to the fetal heart monitor and because I couldn't see the machine recording (they had it facing away from me--stupid!), I couldn't tell when it would stop and readjust my body. I was very uncomfortable as they tell you not to move much so they can make sure the baby is happy (moving around).

After an hour I started getting period like pain and bad back pain. I assumed these were the niggles and it was all normal. Then the contractions became longer (which I still didn't think I was in labor) and stronger. I had the monitor on the whole time because there were gaps (no recording) in the readings! (they kept leaving me alone!! grr!) Then I asked to get up and walk around to help me along with the pain. I went to the bathroom and then went to the kitchen/living room area in the hospital and would bend over every time they came. I was feeling bad b/c I was making so many moaning sounds in the middle of the night when everyone else was sleeping!

Around 2 they checked to see how far along I was and I was 4cm. They brought me to the delivery suite, called my hub and hub raced there (forgot the cam!) and when I was there, they asked if I wanted some gas-gave in and took it. (helped a bit) And then I said I wanted the epidural! (not part of the plan but I knew it was too late). MW came and I asked again...she never answered and I knew why. I was woozy from the gas (apparently I was cussing and bit my husbands arm!). Around 4am he was here!

MW ended up saying she was glad I was induced b/c she thought the placenta wasn't functioning properly and that DS had lost weight!  glad I got him out while I could! All in all, I say the contractions came on fast and strong. Although quite painful, it allowed the labor to progress quickly. I think next time I will try and wait it out too plus they say the second time around the labor period is a lot shorter. But don't want to wait too long cuz the baby might not get enough food.

Hope baby comes naturally before then for you!!

Denise

normal induction procedure is to be monitored first, then an internal (this will determine how "ready" you are and can be a good indicator of how it will initially go) and some gel and more monitoring after the gel.. after that it is anybody's guess. it depends on the person doing it, the hospital policy, how your body is reacting.

i have had three inductions... ending in a ventouse, a c section and a "normal" delivery.

I was induced at 42 weeks. Without going into the finer details I ended up having an emergency c-section after 36 hours as my wee girl was stuck. I didn't have a great experience (had it in my head I was going to have a natural birth with no intervention ) but am thankful that the hospital staff were very respectful of my wishes and held off the stages (oxytocin, epidural etc) until I was ready and fully informed. And my baby girl was born happy as can be and wasn't stressed through the whole thing.

Good luck

I've had two great induction experiences. With the first I was already partially dilated so had my waters broken, synto drip started and within 6 hours both gremlins were out. With the second, she was high and my cervix was closed so I had the gel around 8am, at 2.30pm I had an internal and I was dilated 1-2cm, enough to have my waters broken. Waters broke around 3pm, contractions started around 3.45pm and she was born at 5.21pm.

I rate my induction highly! I had gel put in on a tape (so they could easily remove it if necessary). Contractions started within 4 hours ( i think they were going to anyway ). took 16 hours to get to 4cm though...but manageable. Then they broke my waters and I went 4 to 10 in 2 hours!    didnt need any syncto.

First birth was all ok until the end when I needed syncto drip to get the last bit of dilation.

First birth ventouse (he got stressed) and second c-section (too bloody big)

My experience is in the birth stories section - as it was my first baby also, I can't compare it to a normal labour; though I was told it was a very "hard" labour, because I missed out on the 'build up" - e.g. having easier contractions at first.

Because the contractions became very strong in a very short period of time, they were difficult to deal with, and the epidural became my best friend!

I had internal and monitoring at 7pm, gel at 8pm.
Cramps all night.
Internal at 8am (ouch, internals hurt after the gel). More monitoring and more gel.
More cramps.
ARM at noon(ish).
ACTUAL LABOUR!!
Meconium in waters at 3ish so more monitoring.
Had the drip and epi done at the same time.
Epi did nothing, but gas made it all fun.
Bubba born at 5:30pm.

I was really happy to be induced. Mostly because after the ARM the contractions came thick and fast for the rest of the time. If I was at home I would have refused to get in the car to go to hospital. I am weird though, I love hospitals
