Hi, I am going back to work in a few weeks and was wondering whether it would be worth buying or hiring an electric breastpump? I currently use a manual Avent pump and therefore have all the bottles etc, so I would rather stick with Avent, so that means a basic electric one would be around $275 to buy. Is it worth it for the convenience and ease/speed of pumping? Can anyone share their experiences? I will have to pump perhaps twice a day cos I think I will be able to feed my baby at lunchtime. If not then 3 times I think. Thanks

I would definitely recommend an electric pump. I express every morning as I like to indulge in my love of bubbly now and then and it's a much nicer task now that I have an electric pump. I personally have found that I get more out with the electric pump and I don't get sick of pumping after a few minutes like I did with the manual one. I have an Avent manual pump and a Medela electric pump so can't comment on how good an Avent electric pump is.

If you are going to be expressing that often over a long period of time, then yep electric is the way to go, it gets old quickly with hand expressing

Yep, totally recommend it and although I only expressed for Sam for about four weeks, manual expressing gets really tiring, really fast and it's probably the reason I stopped so early.

Yes I agree too!

I went back to work when each child was 5 months old. I didn't last long expressing with Ollie (about 1 month) as I was using a manual pump which got really tiring and my milk supply dropped off.

With Lilia I used a manual pump too but very quickly got tired of it and hired a double electric pump (from memory about $50 for 3 months plus $60 bond) which was SO much faster and easier. I managed to keep expressing until she was about 9.5 months along with making sure I ate good milk supply food.

Good luck

Yes I would recommend an electric one too, especially since you are going to be using it so often
I had a manual one to start with which actually broke- was an old borrowed one and I hated using it. I cried using it as never seemed to get much.
I bought an Avent Electric and its great, I only use it maybe once/twice a week but was worth the $$ in my opinion

I used the medela swing electric pump (recommended by MW). It was great. They are well worth the $

Thanks everyone, definitely sounds like it is worth it. I talked with a woman at my La Leche group and she said she has a double one that she might sell to me! So that is good

Absolutely, if you are expressing all the time then you don't want to be mucking aroung with a manual. If you are worried about $$ then have a look on TradeMe.

I have both an electric Avent one and a Medula manual one (both bought on TradeMe).

The electric one is great because it leaves me with a hand free so I can surf the net etc while pumping.  I got the Out and About Set - comes with a battery pack so you can still move around and not be tied to the plug socket IYGWIM.

Also I have RSI already in my shoulder and my manual pump was starting to irritate that (here's me thinking a year off work would fix my shoulder!).

Because I have two pumps I can use both at once to save time when I just can't be bothered sitting there for so long.
