im the same as you! i feel silly thinking the docs think im a hypercondriac! BUT i guess when it comes to my kids i dont give a rats what they say as long as i know my boys are alright!
I was unsure once with Bay when he was 4-5 months old and pamol wasnt bringing his temp down so i took him to A&E at 9pm! and by the time we got there he was unconcious and his fever was unbelievably high!!! the docs said he was the worst that theyv seen come in with RSV (the RSV virus is what he had).
Im definately not saying thats what Henry has but im saying trust your mummy instinct

dh and i have decided that we will check is temp agian at 7.30 and if it is still 38 we will take him in to hospital. Unless of course we notice anything else wrong before then. What is a good temperature for him to be?

It says on the back of the well child book to 'get help quickly' if temp is above 38.3
Have you given plunket line a call?
Personally I would goto A&E since 38 is still high and I am guessing it could be higher without Pamol?
Normal temp is 36 - 37
(ETA to correct normal temp range)

My general rule of thumb is if it's 39 or over then I take them to the doc/ER immediately, if it's above 37 but under 39 I give them pamol and reassess in 1/2 hour. If it's come down a bit then I usually hold off on going to the doc and see how things progress, but if pamol doesn't bring it down then I go to the doc.
It also depends on the symptoms tho, a highish fever with no other symptoms is worrying whereas if they obviously have a cold or virus then it's less concerning.

Hope he is ok....
If it's any use, DD gets temps from 38 - 40 degrees when she's sick. Last time I took her to the doctor when she had a virus and it was 39 degrees, the doctor said he wasn't overally concerned as she was still active and although grumpy, was trying to grab his notepad off the desk etc. He said it's time for concern when the fever is accompanied by drowziness (which is really hard to tell at nightime when they are trying to sleep!), lack of responsiveness, floppiness etc.
So I don't think 38 degrees is particularly high, although if pamol isn't bringing it down within an hour probably worth having him checked out.

how did you get on? hope bubs is ok.
Jayden had temps from 38-40 when he had a UTI and I had the ambulance out twice (we live rurally) we ended up in hospital because of the how he was with the fever (vomitting, limp, etc) and pamol didnt control it he ended up neeidng iv fluids and antibiotic but in saying that they werent concerned with the fever alone in hospital as they said that a fever is a good thing showing that the body is fighting infection although in saying that in future I will keep an eye on how Jayden appears if his temp gets that high again and also Pamol takes 30min to 1 hour to bring temp down

38 is my cut off point, then I give pamol & if that doesn't work I give Fenpaed. Any higher than 38 & I go to the dr. Can I just say that you should never feel silly about taking your child(ren) to the doctor. Being safe rather than sorry when it comes to your children's health is the best thing and it makes you a good mum. I take our babies if their temp is up or they are very unsettled, even if it is just for my own peace of mind. Plus I like to make sure that they are ok before night time a sick child at night is just so much harder for some reason.
36.5 to 37.5 is a normal temperature.
Hope Henry is feeling better soon.

Well we took henry to a and e last night at 7.30pm because i checked his temperature and it was 39.2 after having pamol at 5pm. They were very keen to see him and checked him out thoroughly. We were there until 3am because we had to wait for henry to do a urine sample and all has come back clear they think he just has a bit of a blocked up system. They gave him ibroprophen (spelling) and that brought his fever down and ive been instructed to give him pamol every 6hours for the next two days. So other than a very tired household henry is fine. No fever today but definately not very well. Thanks for all the advice and help. And i have come to the decision that i wont feel quilty about taking my child to the dr anymore because it could save his life and since im not a dr im not capable of knowing when something is really wrong and when its fine. Thanks again everyone
