When Jack was a baby the mw told me a cup of cooled boiling water and a couple of pinches of salt - not an exact recipe but I don't think it matters that much
You can get little ampouls at the chemist (have no idea how much that costs) or use boiled water that has cooled down so its cold.
I personally wouldnt reccommend contact lens solution as some have preservatives that may cause a reaction.
The skin around the eye does become red and tender as its alway wet with the discharge, majority of kids grow out of this before the age of one, if not they can syringe the ducts thru under a very light anaesthetic to clear it, but we do this rarely compared to how many babies start off with blocked ducts.
We had this with both babies. Get some cotton wool or cotton wool pads. The saline is not to go in the eye (it would sting like crazy) it is used only to wash the outside of the eye. Make up some warm water using boiled and cool boiled water and dissolve a couple of pinches of salt into it. Dip the cotton wool in the water and wipe from the centre of the eye outwards. Only one wipe per piece of cotton wool and then discard. Keep putting the bm in his eyes every feed but I would also ask for some eye drops.
Joel had sticky eyes until 12 weeks, tried everything and nothing helped until an older lady said when she was a kid her mum used to make a cup of tea with no milk, and let it sit till it cooled. Then using a wipe or makeup remover round wipe his eyes with the tea...sounds odd but we tried it and it worked within about 3 times it was noticeably less then the next afternoon was gone and we haven't had anything since. (was good timing as we got married the day after it went so all the photos with Joelin look good not gunky!!)
Rowan had sticky eyes for about 8 weeks and the BM at the end of every feed did help a bit but in the end we needed to get special eye drops from the doctor. She didn't have conjunctivitis just sticky eye but the BM on it's own was just not doing the trick.
I never figured out how you were meant to squirt BM at such a little target. We just steralised a plastic spoon and dropped it in with that.
