Do you take any supplement during your pregnancy?

We started taking Elevit from when we were TTC and we're still on it... my pharmacist recommended that we take it from pre-pregnancy through to breastfeeding. Is that an overkill?

Also, now that I'm into the final trimester, my cousin from overseas strongly recommeded Prenatal DHA pills (fatty fish oil). Apparently they are really good in the development of baby's brains and memory. My cousin swears by them, and said that his wife was very diciplined in taking them since final trimester and now compared to other kids, apparently their baby boy is way ahead. Maybe coincidence???

Anyway, what are you taking, if anything at all?

I took Folic acid from when we were TTC til , well they ran out actually .
But im not taking anything now, tho i don't have a problem with doing so...Its one of those things I mean to get round to looking at but forget to, cos im sure it can't hurt .

With C all I took was folic acid, she was walking at 8months and talking in 3- 4 word sentences before her 1st birthday , and according to her, knows "way more " than I do
But sounds like the pills certainly didn't do your cousins baby any harm

My OB told me to start taking a pregnancy multi agian for the last trimester - I think mainly because they grow so much and can really drain the Mum of iron and calcium etc. I am taking the Thompsons multi - reccommended doseage is 1 tab twice a day and I am just taking one. I brought the Mom-Omega capsules but they made me vomit!

I'm getting Nordic Natural Prenatal DHA - since I'm still taking Elevit, my pharmacist thought it would be good to just have the DHA (to enhance brain development of baby).

I took Solgar antenatal for the 1st 7 months. I saw a naturopath recently and also had a blood test which showed me to be low in iron plus also calcium, magnesium and zinc! This is desipte eating a very healthy diet - all natural and lots of protein, milk and veg. She advised that the quality of the calicum in the solgar wasnt the best and also recommended fish oils.

I found seeing a naturopath qualified in pregnancy nutrition really helpful and insightful!

So , FYI, I am now taking (and hence I rattle after a meal!(-;) :

Biomedica Natal Care Vege Caps
Vitalize 1-Fe+ (Iron Plus)
Solgar Vit C (to help iron absorption)
Eagle DHA Omega-3 Conc
NFM Professional Calcium and Magnesium

I normally never take vits and supplements but it does seem that baby needs a lot for great growth and development which comes from Mum, esp in 3rd trimester.

Anyhow , more food for thought!

Hey Kitechick,

That's very interesting! Which naturopath do you see, whereabouts are you based in NZ?

I work in a pharmacy and decided that the new Go Healthy Pregnancy Multi was the way for me to go. It has tuna oil for baby brain development in it as well as all the other vitamins and minerals necessary.

I am also on Elevit and have been since when we started TTC. I was taking fish oil in the first tri until I started getting reflux, so I stopped.

I thought baby's brain did most of the developing during the first tri?? I should really find another Fish Oil supp that doesnt annoy my with the reflux, hmmm.

I was taking Solgar since TTC and during the first two trimesters, and have since been taking Pregnacare.
Interesting about the fish oil, wonder if it works during BF also

Im taking Elevit and my GP said to stop at the 12 week mark. I hadnt ever heard that before so I might wait until Ive got a midwife and ask for a 2nd opinion. On the pack it says to take it until you have finished breast feeding, which seems like a really long time to me.

I was taking pregnacare & folic acid while TTC and switched to elevit when i found out I was pregnant. I'll probably keep taking it right through and switch back to something cheaper after bub is born.

Hi Rianna,

I thought that the brain development is full on in the final trimester... anyway, found this article - very interesting~

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Expectant mothers who eat enough omega-3 fats late in pregnancy may give their babies a brain-power boost, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that among 109 Inuit infants they followed, those whose umbilical-cord blood was higher in docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 acid, at birth did better in tests of infant brain and eye development at the ages of 6 and 11 months.

DHA is one of the major omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish like salmon, sardines and tuna. Because of the fat's vital role in brain development, experts have recommended that pregnant women get an average of 300 milligrams of DHA daily.

The new findings, reported in the Journal of Pediatrics, highlight the particular importance of DHA in the mothers' diet during the third trimester, when fetal brain development accelerates.

The level of DHA in newborns' cord blood was closely related to the DHA concentrations in their mothers' blood at the time of delivery. "This study adds to a growing body of evidence regarding the importance of DHA for third-trimester fetal brain development," lead researcher Dr. Joseph L. Jacobson, of Wayne State University in Detroit, told Reuters Health.

Americans' diets are typically low in DHA, he noted, and this line of research suggests that boosting pregnant women's intake "is likely to be beneficial."

The Inuits in this study were from the northern tip of Quebec. Their traditional diet is rich in fish, but many Inuit people have adopted a more Western style of eating; as a result, mothers' DHA levels at the time they gave birth ranged from the low levels typically seen in the U.S. and southern Canada to relatively high concentrations.

When the babies were 6 months old, they were given standard tests of visual acuity and memory. The researchers found that higher cord-blood DHA at birth was linked to better performance on these tests.

The same was true when the babies were given tests of cognitive and motor development at the age of 11 months.

There was no correlation, however, between the infants' test performance and DHA from breast milk. It's likely, according to Jacobson's team, that mothers' third-trimester DHA intake is more important than babies' consumption of breast-feeding because of the "critical third trimester brain growth spurt."

Besides fish, such as tuna and salmon, other DHA sources include fish oil supplements and algae-derived DHA, which is included in some prenatal vitamins.

Pregnant and breast-feeding women are advised to avoid some fish, however, due to potentially high levels of mercury. These include shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tile fish.

According to Jacobson, "it's always a good idea" for pregnant women who want to try fish oil capsules, or any supplement, to speak with their obstetrician first.

1st baby!
