hi everyone, I am a student at Massey Uni, we have a project which involves designing or re-designing a piece of public furniture for special needs people, I decided to focus on pregnant women.

If anyone could spare a couple of minutes to tell me if there are any specific furniture (such as low/ high seats at malls, picnic tables, supermarket shelves etc) that you find uncomfortable or hard to utlise.

Or any information regarding everyday things that are difficult to do such as reaching up high or down low, getting up from seating etc.

Thank you very much for your time

supermarket trundlers - really really hard to get things out when you're heavily pregnant.

ETA - but that's not really furniture

Those metal framed padded squarish stackable chairs you get at conference centres, and ironically- antenatal classes. They make your bum go numb, then cut off circulation to your legs.... and there is no lower back support.

I second the supermarket trolleys - getting stuff out of them at checkout.
Anything that you have to bend down for, e.g. supermarket shelves.
Office desks - belly doesn't fit, so you have to strain to reach your computer etc.

I found those fixed booth style seats at fast food places really hard to get in and out of (not that I went to a lot of fast food places...but you know...cravings!!).

Shopping trolleys were a nightmare for me too.

I was going to say trolleys as well - you need some kind of lever to pull the groceries closer to the end of it when unloading at the checkout.

Otherwise what about the typical bus stop/park chairs, they are metal and dark green.... they make you sit in a way which is not good for aligning a baby, and is therefore uncomfy in the latter stages of pg.

Everything is hard to do when you are pregnant! You can't reach up far enough, if you bend down then good luck getting back up, even washing the dishes or sitting at a table is hard as you can't reach anything because of your tummy!
I definately think supermarket trolleys (why do the darn things slope downwards at the back?!) or public seating (which more often than not slope down at the back too).
Hospital beds is another, they have a very hard metal bar just where you sit when the back of the bed is up, gives you terrible back problems.

Oh supermarket trolleys !! trying to lean over to grab stuff from the back of the trolley sucks lol, you cant go up the side of the trolley as most checkout lanes are narrow lol

Ummm, cant really think of anything else....

I had to abandon a trolley at Pak'n'Save midshop as I couldn't get anything out of it (those trolleys are huge). I was too embarrassed to ask for help The high ones that have at New World (I think for older people) are brilliant.

A public seat that you could lean back into just to take the pressure off your feet and back of the legs would be great. Something high and on a slight forward angle with a "saddle" seat. It would make it easier to get out of. Picture a half seated squat if that makes sense. And don't forget a similar height shelf or table to put your shopping on so you don't have to bend to the floor to pick it up.

thanks heaps for all the info, but its nearing the due date and i still have not come up with any solid arguement (as i cannot do shopping trolleys as they are too specific.....)

im limiting my area to malls specifically. so is there anything within malls that are difficult? such as height of seating, tables, toliets, basins?

what about a drinking fountain for malls?

When i was pregnant i found some of the hand dryers that were lower really hard on my back, i also used to use the wheelchair toilets as they were higher. The toilets are too far apart in my opinion but im nt sure that can be helped. i vomited in the mall on my way to the toilet (not nice). They need more seats around in general too i think. After being sick i couldn't find anywhere to sit so sat on the floor then got stuck (very embarasing). Anyway hope that helps
