HI Ladies,

I missed the last night of our antenatal classes and wasn't there when they were talking about contraceptives.

I know I can't go back on the pill while feeding (and don't really want to anyway). Getting Pg again would not be good as financially we would be stuffed.

Are condoms the only option after bubs arrives to avoid getting pregnant? (Ghastly things that they are) This baby was planned and i'd dearly love the next one to be planned also but when we are in a better situation to have two.

I think the options are: mini pill, condoms or IUD

Or diaphragm (sp?). We talked about this in antenatal last night too lol. Apparently with the minipill you have to be really strict about taking it at the same time each day otherwise it doesn't work (just ask my sister lol!)
Oh and she said with the diaphragm (that is what it's called ay? you know what I mean?) that if you gain or lose 3kg you have to get it refitted - which could be a pain post baby - I know I'm planning on losing some weight lol.

I went on the mini pill and it didn't effect my milk, you just have to take the pills at the same time everyday.

According to my GP, there is a 3 hour window for the minipill. There is a new minipill that is not funded, but can be taken within a 12 hour window.

I really liked being off the pill as I thought coming off it had a really positive effect on my libido. Turns out I was actually pg within 2 weeks of coming off it lol.

I've never liked the idea of IUD's but I don't really know enough about them. Do any of you ladies have them or have you had them? Do they have any concerning side effects? Condoms are awful things.

Yes, Abstinence....tried that one also and look where I am now lol. I keep saying that I was asleep and/or drunk but no one believes me At least I can complain about being pg more if it was DH's fault and not mine!!!

My sister used natural family planning (i.e. charting and not having sex within the conception window) with 100% success before they were ready to TTC #1.

That's the rhythm method isn't it? I hear it's only 75% though?

We really wont be able to afford another baby for a good couple of years after this one. It has been nice not having to worry about getting pg for the last 38 weeks though lol.

Yep, keep all your unused HPTs - I can guarantee you will use them once you've had #1 - checking "just in case"

We may need to get Emma to write a refresher OB article on what abstinence actually involves - or more correctly - doesn't involve

I had an IUD and loved it. Felt really "off" when on the pill due to the change in hormones (or should I say non change - I think the hormone levels were too level for me. Made me have irrational anger). Hate condoms!

I got an IUD before having any kids and it is a bit uncomfortable to have put in and there is a bit of cramping afterwards as it settles in - but after that it is a breeze - don't even know it's there.

Got pregnant within 2 months of getting it out. that was a chemical pregnancy and I don't think related to having had an IUD - and then got pregnant again the next cycle.

I would just advise NOT to get the one with hormones. There is a hormone version and a non-hormone one.

Oh - and it is also good for 5 years before you have to have it removed or replaced. I had mine out after 2.

As with most contraceptions the failure rate is mostly due to human error - or so I'm told anyway.  We used condoms ourselves.

I know condoms are probably the easiest but they're so gross! It's like going to the beach in a raincoat!

I have a mirena IUD which is the one with hormones and I love it. I went on the mini pill after Jack and it was horrible I was bleeding pretty much the whole time and then Caprece came along.

My AF lasts about 4 days if it even comes at all and its only ever spotting. I've had no problems with weight or hormones and it appears to be working for contraception LOL. The only thing is unless you have had really heavy AFs and have been anaemic it costs around $300. The standard one is free. After having a baby getting an IUD in is a walk in the park

For the last 18months my partner and I used no contraception(I couldn't be bothered going back on the pill, and he refused to buy condoms). We made sure he didn't do the deed inside when I was ovulating. 100% success rate for us. The reason I got pregnant...well, the deed was done at the wrong time of the month. woops.
But we would also be screwed (financially) if number two was to come soon after, so I will def be mini pill AND condoms once our bub comes.
