Am pretty sure J has got this. Has been feverish, lethargic and no appetite over the weekend.   I also know he has been in contact with another girl who had it.   He is much better this morning and we are due to go to a playgroup this afternoon but I'm just wondering if he is past the contagious time or not. Have been trying to find out on the net, but it doesn't seem definitive. Does anyone know? He only has one blister on his finger to date if that is an indication of anything.

I don't know about Hand, Foot & Mouth specifically but I just came across this site when I was looking up something different, seems to be useful

(and it says: Hand, foot and mouth disease is most contagious during the first week of infection when there are spots or ulcers in the mouth. Spots in the mouth usually clear within 7 days and the rash within 10 days.)

Yeah this is a PITA, Jack has just been diagnosed.. hasn't been around babies for a week before it turned up. I'm guessing seeing as he only got the spots (only in his mouth and not ulcers.. they are spots which I assumed were thrush) yesterday that he can't go to DC on Thursday? Man when will I ever get to work?

emz, my eldest daughter has spots on her tongue and a few on her forearm. DH rushed her to the doc last night when i saw them and he said it was either hand, foot and mouth or chicken pox...thinking it was more chicken pox. but now i'm wondering if it's h,f &mouth?? is there anything you need to give them for it ..antibiotic??
and what period do they need to stay home for?

i'm watching her like a hawk for spots, but they don't look 'pocky' to me...

Hiya, my ds had hand foot and mouth a few months ago. It looks more like a rash then chicken pox and they are contagious till the spots go. I found out the week before we were flying overseas but he cleared up in a few days. They only thing u can give then is Paracetamol and TLC. The rash doesn't itch like chicken pox. I think it was worse for me then for him hate been stuck in without company!!!

I don't think Jack has got this now... spots were only there for 2 days and have now gone, thinking he could have had blocked pores around his mouth (well cheeks really) from sunblock lol cos he often gets that and maybe he does have thrush on his tongue? No spots on hands or feet and the spots are pimple like, h,f & m ones are supposed to be more ulcers on the tongue.

turns out she does have hand, foot and mouth!
after a lot of investigating...ringing different doctors/plunket line/nurses...
i was so sure it wasn't chicken pox!
they should change the name though...it sounds so gross and creepy for such a harmless thing!...

now for a week at home with no play dates!!

grrrrr....and my regular G.P rang to say stop giving her the antibiotics the doctor at the emergency clinic perscribed last night as there was totally no need to! it annoys me when doctors willy-nilly give out drugs just to put the paremts at ease that they are doing something!!!
