LUCKY YOU!
Officially no its not ok... They are pretty strict about food these days, 20 years ago they would have laughed at this.
I dont know how much you stick to the rules but i say if its fresh there is no harm. What do you think we did back in the day when seafood and wild game where what we ate?
As long as you make sure it is cooked properly and heated right through.
I was super careful with my first, didnt eat pate, seafood, or anything on the no no list. Second time round i used common sence. Not eating sushi from the food court but making it fresh at home so i know how hygenic it is...etc
Take it or leave it, i know if i had a crayfish looking at me it would be down my throat in no time

I'm not a seafood person so I find it easy to say no. I thought seafood was off our list completely?

Thanks for your replies, I have just had a look on the NZ food safety website and it says as long as it is fresh and heated to piping hot it is ok, the same with qiuite a few other things that I thought were a no no but as long as they are heated to piping hot they are fine. i am looking forward to dinner tonight with DH!

hell, I'd eat it too. Just like I sipped some wines last night (probably totalled a glasss all night). All in perspective huh. You could probably do more harm by drinking diet soft drinks (IMO) so just be sensible....and make sure you ENJOY IT!!!!

Hey there, I thought it was ok as long as it was piping hot. I always look at the NZFSA before eating things I am not sure of and I have eaten crayfish, I knew it was fresh and freshly cooked and I was fine...

nzpiper - I've been told my a friend who did research on FAS that as studies are hard to actually do on pregnant women drinking, that it can be hard to pinpoint when the damage is done. What studies have shown is that some babies are born with FAS when the mother only drank one glass during her whole pregnancy, and others where the mother were frequent drinkers. And also the opposite, babies born completely ok when both scenerios. For myself, I wouldn't take the risk, scare tactics work for me lol
Aithne - I am very surprised you have got to 22 weeks without knowing this info. Your midwife should have given you a booklet from NZ Food & Safety at your first visit, and also talked over it with you. If she hasn't, at your next visit you should ask her why you weren't given this important information.

I think i was given a pamphlet on listeria, but that only really says about deli foods.
If there is some other book that i havent been given then i may ask her next month when i see her.

Yeah there is a book from NZ Food & Safety. Just give them a call. They have an 0800 so should be able to send you out one so you don't have to wait until you see your midwife.

Aithne - here is a link to the booklet online. When you get to the chart just rotate it so you can see it....or print it out.
Safter Eating In Pregnancy
Oh the link looks like this: (and it just after the list of links)
You can also download the booklet in PDF format [PDF 1.3M ].
