Hi all - I'm a bit confused about the whole 'no spas' thing during pregnancy because of raising your body temp too much.

What about hot baths? I really would like to relax in one but i keep thinking ' if you can't use a spa then surely you can't use a hot bath'. Anyone know about this. Thanks in advance.

I had a bath every night in my last trimester, I needed them to soothe my aching everything!

As long as it's not too hot you should be fine, the hardest part for me was actually getting out of the bath!!!!

As long as it isn't super hot they are fine. When I was pregnant I went in the spa after I did aqua aerobics. I was in there for 5 minutes max and it was at a temp of 39C.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

i think as long as it is not so hot you are sweating, or getting red and dizzy then it is ok - use your instincts - if you feel too hot then it probably is time to run a bit of cold water in!

I have had a hot bath nearly every night of this pregnancy, much to Genesis Electricity's delight. I fully intend to have a water birth as I find the water so soothing . . .

I had hot baths while pregnant, they were bliss. I think the difference with a spa pool is that in a bath you're not fully covered with the water so your body can cool down and you are able to regulate the water temperature better. A spa is constantly being heated and your body is totally immersed.

I agree with the others, I have had a bath every day pretty much since getting pregnant, nothing soothes an aching back and sore ribs like nice warm water. I haven't been strict on the temp, its not so hot I come out glowing read or start sweating or anything.

Mind you its getting harder and harder getting in and then out the bath

i had a hot bath almost every night last preggy, not so much this time. And i have spas regularly too. I just don't stay in too long if it's really hot.

Some say you shouldn't but as susie says, if you listen to your instincts, you will get out when you need to.

The spa thing is to do with bacteria that can live in water used by many people. Apparently pregnant woman have a higher risk of getting sick.

I have hot baths as I'm so sore now
I've had a couple of spas too.

oh fair enough then bout the spas. i have it at my parents place, so i'm sue i will be fine. yea you do have a higher risk of getting sick when preggy as your hormones are all over the place & your immune system is growing a baby so makes ita bit weaker. my understanding anyways

my MW said if you are sweating then it's too hot, that goes for spas, baths and showers.

I love hot baths, I love hot water on my body in general, but I tend to have to hot baths to the point where I go red but thats the only way I feel good. None of my 6 babies have been effected by me having hot baths however I dont have them every day, Im really a shower girl and I love them hot also.

I wasn't sure about baths because of the warnings about spas. Spas have quite a few bugs I think because of the high temp.

I stayed clear of baths because I wasn't sure until 3rd trimester. Now I have a bath about once a week to try to soothe my back.

i was very much like mumof72b last time, had reasonably hot baths, but i could stand them, this time i can't. and Vincent loves his baths & loves them nice n warm, so no harm to him. i fully belive that you will know if it's not good, & your body will tell you

I asked my MW about this as I too love to have hot baths especially in winter when it's cold.

Apparently the reason for avoiding the hot baths is that the baby gets hot when your internal temp rises but it can't cool itself down the same way you can by getting out into the colder air. If the baby gets too hot then it's body will shut down so can cause miscarriages or birth defects.

This is only if your internal temp gets over about 38 degrees though and as others have said you tend to get out by yourself before it gets this high so sounds like you just follow your instincts.

I go in our spa pool all the time. You just have to make sure they are regularly clean which should be happening anyway. People who weren't pregnant have got sick from them too; legionnaires disease; because they don't keep their spa pools clean properly. You should avoid spa water in your mouth preganant or not because of this.
With temperaure for hot baths or spas my midwife advised me that 37 degrees or below is the best and safest temperature.
You're not always fully submerged in a spa either, just like a bath it depends on how you sit.

all this talk of baths is making me want to hop in one now!!! I've had quite a few baths during my pregnancy and love them, the only problem I have now is my bump is so big it sits out of the water!!!!

I also go to pregnancy swimming and the pool there is heated to about 35degrees - so nice!!!!
