I was thinking the whole nappy world had gone quiet - that was until I had bookings for 4 demos in one weekend!

I'm feeling disillusioned with cloth, finding it hard keeping up with washing cos I'm back at work, and getting frustrated cos my inserts are smelling!! I stripped them and they smelt fine, next wash they stank again

I'm wondering if it's cos we're using Reflex Sensitive instead of Persil Sensitive now. We're not using Ecostore for nappies so hopefully that will make a difference. Now to get on top of the washing again...

...though my sister has just made me (I mean the boy) some cute new nappies, so that's a bit of an incentive

Arohanui, do you use something like canestan inwash? I think dettol is another. works brilliantly for the smell.

Finding it fine to keep on top of nappies here - if I was every 2nd day, hanging them inside on the rack, but then I have 27 that fit seb....

I've been really naughty and have been leaving the nappies for 2-3 days in the bucket as we only do a wash twice a week and it's only night nappies these days. So our inserts get quite stinky too. We use the detto in-wash stuff if tea tree isn't enough, just make sure you give them an extra rinse afterwards.

I've got all of my inserts out in the sunshine today to give them a good airing

Yeah I have been feeling the same Liz. They never used to stink, for a whole yeah of using them fulltime- we didnt have hotwater in our washing machine, so soaked them in ecostore nappy soak in bucket of hot water, then rinsed in washing machine and all was great.
Now do a warm wash with ecostor powder, soak poo ones only, and they al l the liners are brown and stink so bad now.

Please help!! Would love to love my cloth naps again!

I use Dettol and don't seem to have a problem with smell, even tho I dry all my nappies and inserts in the dryer. I do use mostly prefolds/flats as inserts tho and I find they don't retain odours as badly as the microfibre.

As for me, I've been too busy CHANGING nappies to think about them lol

I am desperate for new nappies, but just can't afford any at the moment

As for the washing thing, we use the Dettol rinse in every load. I just pop it in the fabric softener dispenser. The nappies never smell yuck so it must be working

I use regular Detol in the fabric softener dispenser once a week - with an extra rinse after - and we don't have any problems with smells. I wash every 1-2 days. Otherwise I do a cold pre-rinse cycle in the machine followed by a warm wash with Eco-store powder.

Emma - what's your favourite nappy on Chaira at the moment?

Yeah we have the canneston though haven't been using it every single wash (so will now!). Just re-read my post and I meant to say we're NOW using ecostore for nappies, not we're not using ecostore. Oops sorry confusing typo.

I had the boy in cloth again today, yay. Will try the sunshine thing too.

I have been feeling a bit disillusioned too! Twelve days with no sun, sick kids and drying racks all over the place... had driven me back to sposies. Must get back into cloth again.

We have been getting leaks though so that was another reason I had stopped. May be they need stripping. Have put Harry on formula so he is now getting way more fluid in a day than he was ( another story for another thread!) so he is weeing way more too.

My ecobubs seem to be the worst though?? My fuzzis seem to be better at holding in the wee. Maybe it is the difference in side snaps as opposed to front snaps ( not sure if my nappy jargon is correct there but hopefully you get the idea?).

Any ideas ladies? He is wet around the edges of his bodysuits ( around the leg and crutch) and sometimes along the top of the nappy????

Maybe I need more inserts or something?

Yeah maybe more inserts? That started happening with ours, I had had one insert and a booster, now I put in 2 inserts and they're all good as far as leaks go.

SO glad i'm not the only one disillusioned! It's the weather as well eh. I was feeling so overwhelmed...

Your in luck - it doesn't smell anything like Dettol. It's in the laundry section of the supermarket and it smells like eucalyptus. I actually find once they are washed and dried they don't really smell like anything though - just clean and fresh

I think the the bottles will definitely be making a difference ot how much he wees as they take in such a big amount of fluid in one go. Try 2 inserts and see how you get on. I'd also suggest switching to singlets instead of bodysuits as they can cause compression wicking - giving you the wet feeling around the edges - or if you really want something that does up underneath go for wool, which doesn't feel wet like cotton, or buy a size bigger so that it's not putting pressure on the nappy.

Hope that helps!

Vic xx

I don't think winter helps with the cloth love. I know I struggle with washing at the best of times!

Soon will be spring and the washing line will be fully operational again (may even help with the smell issues )

AND NON DRYING!! #2 the smell!!! his day nappies (which are all new itti bitti) dont smell but the nighttime naps always smell like mice! (when they havnt been cleaned! ) and all his bedding smells of it! and he seems to be leaking through every night regardless of what i do i use HC stuffed with 3 inserts at night and they have been stripped.

oh and despite soaking and stripping them - they still smell

totally loving itti though
