Topic: Blocked noses Posted: 30 June 2008 at 8:19pm |
Elle has her second cold ever and it is all in her nose. She is so congested. We tried saline drops as recommended by the chemist but they did nothing. It's really affecting her breathing and sleeping. is there anything we can do?
She currently has vicks vaporub on a tissue under her sheet and a tiny bit on her chest.

I've heard vicks on feet is quite good.
Also the slightly mad, but nice woman in a shop the other day said to put half an onion next to a child's bed at night and they wake up well....
good luck

We have taken to using demazen when Charlotte has a blocked nose. She absolutely hates having a blocked nose it makes her so upset. She will cry out 'bogies up my nose mummy' and get really worked up and of course when she is crying her nose runs even more. Vicious cycle!
A friend recommended Demazen ( which is an over the counter antihistamine) and I went and talked to the pharmacist just to check if it would be okay. Only thing is the rules have changed and they are not supposed to sell it for use on under 2's. In saying that it could be worth a chat to your doc or local pharmacist?? It does make Charlotte a bit tired so only use it a couple of times a day 9less than the recommended dosage).
Not sure if that is something you would want to use or not? Hope Elle gets better soon. not much fun for the poor wee dots is it (or their Mummys!!)

Aww poor little one, I hope it gets better quickly!
Alyssa has only had a few colds and we have this process now.. raise the head end of the cot with yellow pages (although not sure how we'll do that in a normal bed now), Kavol on tissues under the sheet, and vicks on the chest. She coped so much better once we did this after the first cold.

Take her into a steamed-up bathroom for half an hour. You'll probably have to take some toys in so she's not bored. If only preschoolers could blow their nose!
Remember to keep an eye on her as she can develop an ear infection from the conjestion. Kryssi has one now

We did the hot steamy bath thing. I would raise the end of the cot but she moves all over the place...head up head down etc so there is probably no point

I got Eden prescribed "Dimetapp" its a decongestant from the doctor (but i think it can just be bought at a chemist) and its great at unblocking Eden, we raised the end of her cot as well, and yup she moves all over the place, but it seems to have helped.
also have you got a dehumidifier? they can work wonders in a kids room (just remember to turn it off before baby is in the room!) i have one in Edens room and it works fantastically.
goodluck, i know how awful colds can be for littlies!

We do the saline drops if Leah is really blocked up, and after I have put them in we suction both sides of her nose with one of the bulby things, the saline seems to loosen things and then the bulb sucks it all out and she can breathe much better. She doesn't like it and it takes two of us to do it, but it does help. We also have the dimetap infant drops,(these are the ones the dr prescribes).
Good luck

I had dimatap drops but last time I had a cold and was struggling with a cough in the middle of the night...I used them myself!!! As I had no other cough syrup.
Whoopsy!

We got Karvol drops which I reckoned helped a little... you can get them from most pharmacies and supermarkets (in the baby aisle). You just open the capsule and put the drops on a tissue in the cot or on their pajamas. Also we rub vicks on her feet and cover them with socks, that's meant to really help it absorbs really quickly through feet. Our Dr told us to try that one.
Other than that we just try the saline drops and the hot steamy bathroom trick.
