 Topic: Heartbeat, when does i start?

hello, just wondering, my friend went to have her dating scan at 6w 1d and the guy said, no heartbeat, that'll start during week 7
All the books and pages i've read say i starts during week 5.. so... what is it???????

well i dont know what is normal but i had a dating scan at 5weeks 5days and they could see a heartbeat but the lady did tell me that she thought if i was there the day before it probally wouldnt have been seen and that they often dont see them for about another week.

I suppose it's like everything in pregnancy, we are all different. I know a girl who got a heartbeat around mid 5 weeks last year so, anything is normal i guess 
My friend is due the exact same day as me  and work at the same company lol
I'm in for my first scan on monday, can wait to see the heartbeat and see everything is fine

It does start at week 5, but the heart at that point is barely the size of a poppy seed so it's too small to see on u/s. It can sometimes be seen as early as 6 weeks (we saw this baby at 5w5d on an internal scan) but you can't reliably expect to see it till after 7 weeks.

I waited till 8 weeks to see ours to make sure we had the best shot at seeing it (and taking into account dates might not have been right etc).

My doc told me to wait till 7 weeks for the scan as sometimes it either isn't there yet or can't be detected with ultrasound earlier than that and yet everything can still be ok.

I had my first scan with Andrew at 6w2d (my dates) and there was no heartbeat (and I freaked), but I was only 5w4d by the scan. I went back a week and a half later and there was one very strong heartbeat and now I have one active 4 year old.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!
