Topic: Metallic Taste Posted: 26 June 2008 at 3:33pm |
Oh wise and knowing mummies (and mummies to be) since about 5DPO I've had the most horrid metallic taste (kinda like blood) in my mouth. There has been much bandying around that it's a pregnancy symptom. I'm not getting my hopes pinned on this right now though. What I do want to know is, has anyone else had something like this? How early did you notice it and were you able to get ride of it? I find that washing my mouth with mouth wash helps for about a minute and otherwise sucking on sweet things (fruit jubes, skittles etc) helps but only for as long as I'm actually sucking on them. It's a constant taste that is occasionally worse then other times through the day (in that I can go with out sucking on something for maybe 10 minutes then it builds back up to a sickening level). I can't leave water in mouth too long as it increases the taste horribly. Brushing my teeth, scrapping my tongue don't seem to help much either.
Any thoughts most welcome.

I've had it with medication - in pregnancy it wasn't metallic but my whole taste system went really weird - that was my first sign that made me go "hmmmm"!

Oi! Nikki behav, don't you be getting my hopes up girlie (ok so they are already up but I'm pulling really hard on that lead to rein them in)
*sigh* I'm putting on kilo's by the minute! nobody is supposed to suck on so many lollies in one day (I even made toffee the other day in the hopes it would take longer to dissolve (- note, once you reach 30+ stop eating stick jaw toffee or you'll be getting false teeth sooner then you thought)

Ack. I've had it numerous times ... just not when I was pg!
I found there was little I could do about it either.
Funnily enough, I had plenty of pg symptoms when TTC, but when actually pregnant? Nada. Well, not in the first five minutes anyway It's one of life's little mysteries that.

Well I just had to force my self to eat my apple crumble, which tasted perfectly fine to everyone else. I've just left dinner (we have a big group dinner on Thursday's) because the taste in my mouth was so horrid, I'm home sucking of toffee

Do you remember how long it lasted? Did you find anything to help? 6 days of non-stop sucking on sweets is not too healthy me thinks.
Maybe I should make some Apple ice-poles or something? Hmm, maybe not apple

I've only just started getting that odd taste now! I chew gum and that seems to help. It's usually just for the morning though.
I know lotsa pg ladies who have it as a first symptom though. Do your teeth feel furry? Hehe, that was my first symptom
Eeeeeeeeh! I'm trying not to get my hopes up! But Eeeeeeh!

My friend had it quite bad with both of her boys but couldn't stand the taste of mint so she bought cinnomon toothpaste and brushed her teeth hourly (literally!)
Hope it's a good sign for you Tracey

My doctor & naturopath believe (because I'm not UTD) that it's a zinc deficiency so I'm now taking zinc supplements.
Thanks for all the advice.

hey let us know if the zinc supplements work- in my first few weeks of preg i did exactily what you did to get rid of the taste and i ended up gaining 11kgs over 4 weeks! it went for a while and had now come back- chewing gum does help.....and im brushing my teeth like a finatic- so i gues thats not helping-
also i heard somewhere that thats a symptom of when your trying to concieve? dunno....and does that mean i need some zinc supplements?
