Topic: Swelling / Pre-Eclapsmia Posted: 16 June 2008 at 9:07am |
Hi ladies
I have slight swelling of my ankles (almost cankles!) and notied in the weekend my fingers and hands are now swelling
I had a blood test friday for everything and my BP was fine last wed when I went to see the ob and she gave me POS for proiten to do everyday and I havent had any more than a trace of protien....Im planning on ringing the ob this morning to let them know about the hands and find out my results but...
I was wondering what level of swelling is normal and can you get pre-eclampsia without protien in your urine?
any others experiences with swelling or pre-eclampsia?
Thanks ladies

I had sooooo much swelling, my feet/ankles/hands/face were way fatter than usual and real sore. If you have no trace of protein in your urine I think the swelling is just one of those lovely things some ladies get in pregnancy. Another thing to keep an eye on is your blood pressure going up. I had a wee scare when I was preggie but it turned out to be nothing... I'll see if I can find the thread to bump it up for you.....

Hi Kye
I had pre-eclampsia with my pg and had no marked increase in protein, however my bp did start to get very high (193/110). The swelling started at about wk 33 too and got progressively worse. I mainly had it in my ankles/legs with a little bit in my hands and face.
I think that you are doing the correct things by informing your Ob, all you can do really is sit with feet up to try and reduce swelling. My MW said if I could lie on the floor with my feet elevated up high go for it (does get hard to get down and up though!!).
Fingers crossed it is not pre-eclampsia for you, I must admit that even though I got quite swollen and had a high BP everything turned out fantastic in the end.
So take it easy and sit with your feet up and get everyone to run round after you

I had pre-eclampsia and like others said, I was swelling from about 33 weeks. My BP was fine and my urine was sweet until 37 weeks and then it all turned to custard with super high BP and my proteins were all over teh show. By this stage i was swelling in my fac back thighs everywhere.
Def wirth ringing Ob and keeping a really close eye on it as mine basically tuurned overnight and I was induced at 38 weeks.

i second what PP said.. i had swelling that got really bad from week 34 onwards..i had blood tests and mw appts twice a week and all was fine till week 38 when i had a 24 urine collection and it was up..and then had low platelets as well..other signs..headache with flashing lights.. i had all the signs but at different times mostly ended up with just high BP and swelling and then the urine..then induced at 38 weeks because of PE.

Yep I had it both times and next time i'm not allowed to risk it.
My last pregnancy I had low platelets, and that is one of the warning signs. I started with low platelets so was doomed from the beginning lol.
Pre Eclampsia is more than just swelling, you BP is usually higher, Protein in your pee (more than just a trace it needs to be ++ or +++ on the POAS) headaches, flashing lights.
All combined it is usually pre eclampsia however high BP and swelling is usually gestational hypertension.
Def see the OB and they will have a better idea of what is going on. Any questions feel free to PM me, I have answered many questions on this topic as I have had it twice now.

You can have swelling, high BP, flashing lights etc etc but if you don't have protein they won't usually call it pre-eclampsia unless your BP is skyrocketing.
Swelling is completely normal, I went up a size in shoes and had to wear jandals to my graduation at 38 weeks cos I couldn't fit anything else and my face was HUGE
I think your BP also depends on where you started. Like mine is normally really low (like between 100-110/60) so going up to 140/90 was really bad for me, but not necessarily for anyone else. I think a 30 point increase on the bottom number is bad from what I recall, anything under that is normal.

I had swelling in maily my feet, ankles and calves, started to get it in my hands as well. It started from about 34 weeks and Leah was born at 36 weeks.
My blood pressure was normal the whole time and no protein found so was just told to rest as much as possible.

I'm a sweller too, mainly feet and ankles but also in my hands. Was worst with Maya coz it was midsummer so really hot. But I've never had BP issues or more than a trace of protein.

Thanks Ladies
I rang my ob and she sent me to my local gp to get my bp taken, was 150/78 nurse didnt think it was significantly high and I do have a habit of increasing my top number myself (anxiety about bp!) but normally its around 135-140/70 so maybe a slight rise.
She also rang the ob to tell them and I heard her say to the ob that my bloods were fine and then she said oh no they werent...she didnt tell me anything just said all will be fine and that my ob will ring me later....so just waiting to hear what she says and what my bloods were!
fingers crossed not PE!

BP is seriously such a joke, m/w told me when I was 39weeks that Jack had a massive hole in his heart (from a scan that day), I was rushed into hospital to get him whipped out and they were like 'wow your BP is high' well duh! Then they scanned again and no hole was found then voila my BP dropped 20 points. Stupid stupid people. The more they say things 'could be' or are wrong, the more the mummies stress out and then BP goes up. Dumb dumb dumb.
Hugs hun!

as an update.....
went to the ob yesterday about my bp etc and it was still up so shes put me on bp meds but at this stage I dont need to be hospitalised just have to be on couch rest for the rest of the pregnancy but im allowed to go into work for my last two days for a few hours and then really not allowed to do anything no cleaning, no nesting even no baby shopping! oh well better than being in hospital and better than developing pre-eclampsima! She recons that I will be induced 37-38 weeks so thats good hopefully dont have to wait a full 6 weeks for bubs to arrive!!!!

I had the exact same thing.... I ended up putting on 17 kilos during my pregnancy (I was at an 8 kilo gain before the swelling started) and it all started about 33 weeks. My blood pressure was a lil high but no textbook for pre-eclampsia... I usually had 2++ protein in urine... and all that swelling.
I still didn't get diagnosed with preeclampsia until I was 41 weeks and then they did an immediate induction.
I had been saying for weeks that I had all the signs and saying "Helllooooo someone take notice".
But my lil boy was so healthy looking after being cooked in the oven an extra week, he was perfect.
