Topic: Baby swimming lessons Posted: 20 March 2008 at 8:54pm |
Hi
Am thinking of starting swimming lessons soon, has anyone had any experience good/bad/otherwise with swimming? he is 6 months old and loves swimming at home
Any information about it would be greatly appreciated!

we started jake at one, and he went for two terms - he enjoyed it, but at that age I thought he didn't really benefit from lessons as they were more like playing. now our kids are 3 and 2, we are going to pay for the lessons. here it is $90 a term, so I really didn't want to be paying that for a child who was really just splashing about in a big bath.

Started swimming lessons with Ella in early Feb. While we are enjoying and think it was worthwhile I think after this term we are going to leave it for a while. Ella loves being in the water but I sometimes find that the lessons are a bit too full on for her and there is so much going on. It has been good for giving me ideas of what I can do with her and given me the confidence to put her under the water.....so I think once the lessons stop I will just take her to pools every now and then and we have a play around.
We are doing our lessons at our local leisure centre and it costs $80 for the term.

I never took Maya to lessons, just took her swimming every week on our own till she was 3 then she started lessons and she is great in teh water.
I took the gremlins for one term when they were 6 months but Mercedes got ear infection after ear infection so they ended up missing half the term and it was a waste of $$$. Now the nanny and I just take them once a week, that way if they are sick it doesn't cost me anything.

We've been going for about half a term or so now, and I think it is worthwhile to go for one term and see what they do so we can then keep doing the same things on our own. Jake really enjoys it now. He wasn't so keen on being dunked at first but doesn't seem to mind it now and loves splashing around. Its really just about water confidence when they are under 3-4 years ... so if you think that is worth spending the money on then it is ... but if you're happy to play around with bubs without the songs and clapping and other bubs then maybe its not worth it. I do think learning how they dunk was good though ..... as I would have never put his head under otherwise!!
And as hubby goes in with Jake, its been great daddy/bub time.

I love our lessons and think they are well worth the money. It works out at just $7.50 per lesson which I think is pretty good. It goes on for 1/2 hour which is just the right amount of time, he is normally getting a bit chilly by then. I have found it great to learn how to hold him properly and teach him how to go under water without sniffing the pool...lol
Brilliant could not recommend it highly enough.

I've been taking my kids since the end of last year, the last term and I can't reccomend it highly enough. Charlotte was about 7 months when she started and just loves, it, she is a real water baby, andhas just been bumped up a class cos she is so confident. Jake ont he other hand was old enough to be scared, and it has been a real battle with him. He was almost 2.5. I really wish I had started earlier with him. He is getting better now, but I will have to continue through the winter, which I didn't really want to do, just so we don't lose all we have gained with him. Worth the $ if you can afford it, for sure, and he younger, the better, IMHO.

I agree with Annie. We started Samantha at 5 months and she is so confidence compared with other kids in the class. It is so worth the money as far as I am concerned, plus a great way to get out and meet other mums

yeah i wouldnt recommend you go to papakura pools or you may get a repeat of infections etc some people have had...
we go to splash in east tamaki - chlorine and bromine free. She has loved swimming in hotel pool and spa etc too....i say ifyou can go bit further then do. once a week is great for them. Can be costly - this term is $11 a lesson but well worth it. AND for us a necessity with the boat and our lifestyle.

We do swimming lessons and we love them! Daniel gets to splash and play with other lil bubbas which is great for his water confidence and also he gets to interact with other bubbas which is way more fun IMO than going to playgroup which was boring as for me. We will be doing it next term for sure.

I started taking Lachlan to lessons at 6 months and he LOVES he, now he knows what we are doing and starts squealing as soon as we get to the door! He is a real water baby and we spend a bit of time at the lakes and the beach and have lots of water around the farm so I really want him to be water safe and confident.
I also enjoy it becuase it is another chane to get together with other mums of babies around the same age (Lachie is the youngest and I think the oldest is about 10 months.

My friends a swim coach for babies and children, her daughter has attended since 6 months and loves it. We were going to enroll Luke but decided to just take him to the local pool which is really close. He loves it and the pool is free!!!
Will do swimming lessons next summer i guess.

We have been taking Oli since he was 3 months old, he was the youngest by far in the class, but he has done really well and now kicks like crazy and holds the kickboard (okay he is trying to eat it but he holds it). He has been going under for the last few weeks and doesnt grizzle or cry now - he looks a bit confused but not too worried. We are going to Hilton Brown and they are pretty expensive, they charge by the month which can be a bit confusing too.
