I gave Jett baby custard for the first time late this morning. He didn't like it one bit, so I only fed him a few mouthfuls before deciding not to give him anymore. Within 20 mins his chin went bright red with little white dots on it. He has excema on his cheeks anyway, but not on his chin. He started scratching ferociously, especially his neck & backs of his knees (where his excema is anyway). Then half his bottom lip went white & swollen. I rang Heathline & they said unless he gets temp, or starts slurring then he'll be fine. It lasted about 40 mins, before the redness went away on his chin, and about half an hour later his lip went back to normal.

It freaked me out though, and now I'm going to have to be really cautious with giving him dairy, or anyone trying to feed him dairy!!

Samara has the same allergy - I think it is an allergy to milk protein. It's very scary isn't it!

She has reacted to formula and baby museli with milk in it so now I read the ingredients on everything and don't give her anything with milk in it.

Oh really Kim? Did she react similar to how Jett did? Is she breastfed or bottle and if bottle, is it goats milk or soy you use?

Exactly the same although the second time she had trouble breathing which totally freaked me out. She also had hives all over her body for a couple of hours.

She is still breastfed as a couple of people I've spoken to whose children have had the same allergy have said not to put her on soy formula as she could develop a reaction to soy as well. So we've got an appointment with an allergist at the end of April and hopefully she will give me a formula.

I've also replied in our thread!

I noticed Jett got a couple of hive like spots on his arm and neck. I kept a close eye on his body & stripped his clothes off to see if any more spots appeared, but the worst was his chin, and neck.

That's horrible Samara had trouble breathing! That's my biggest fear! How long did that last, and did you need to take her to the Dr?

Spencer has an allergy to cow's milk protein as well (although perhaps not so severe but he has only ever had formula so hard to tell as that is highly processed).
we noticed when he was weaned because he got really bad constipation and ezcema which he didn't have when breastfed. I was told not to give goats or sheeps milk as the proteins are so similar to cows that it won't help and also not to give soy until 12+months as introducing soy too early can cause an allergic reaction to that. Spencer is on neocate which is a specialist formula, it is broken down to amino acids.

25% of babies with a dairy allergy have a soy allergy too.

Be really careful with all premade baby stuff over 6 months, you will be amazed at what has dairy in it!

Yep so dont go giving him soy formula. I would take him to Dr to at leats get it recorded what happened, so that if u do need special formula on prescription in the future there is a record of the reaction.

Isla had same thing to butter when she licked a piece of toast with butter on 6 months ago. Previuosly she had reacted to me having dairy products while bf, so had never been directly exposed to any diary products before, herself. Yay for us, she has now fully out grown her allergy!

I'm hoping Jett's not going to be that bad with this allergy. I haven't stopped having dairy and b/feed him. I have tried him on formula before & besides the fact he didn't want a bar of it, he didn't react to it. I can see I will have to be very careful with trying him on foods now. My older 2 have had NO problem in the allergy department, so this is all new to me!

You'll just have to keep the solids thing pretty bland for awhile and one food at a time to look out for any allergies. Bummer though, Italiah, especially with 2 kids that have been fine

Thats scary Italiah, and I'm shocked that Healthline didn't tell you to take him to the doctor immediately! Allergic reactions can be potentially really serious, especially if there is any swelling of the lips/mouth/tongue.
I definitely recommend seeing your doc to talk about where to from here, unfortunately its possible that Jett may have other allergies, and it's important to get a referral to a dietician so you can talk about ways to keep Jett's diet balanced when he's dairy free.

Sorry if I sound a bit preachy, I was just so clueless when Maya first started having reactions, the first two I didn't even recognise as allergic reactions, I thought it was her woolly jumper rubbing on her face, it wasn't till the dietican from the Nutricia Advisory Service was giving me advice on getting Maya to take a bottle and I mentioned the hives and she was like "whoa, stop, no more formula!"

My Maya had cows milk protein allergy, plus soya, egg and peanut allergy and had outgrown them all by 3 1/2. The gremlins are allergic to peanuts and have outgrown cows milk protein intolerance. They were never exposed to dairy till after 10 mths coz of the family history.

Just something else, did the custard have egg in it? If so, it may be the egg rather than the dairy that he reacted too, or even both.

It happened in the weekend so my husband was home luckily and he held and tried to comfort Samara while I phoned healthline to see if we should take her straight to the Dr. She asked me a few questions and in that time her breathing got better so we didn't end up going to the Dr.

Wow, I just can't believe that, that is so irresponsible of Healthline! I mean obviously Samara was fine, but you can never tell how serious a reaction is going to become!

I know - I couldn't believe she was asking questions when it was pretty obvious that Samara was in destress and I was crying!

Thanks emma for that info, I will def take him to the Dr's and see what they say about where to go from here. I checked the label of the baby custard & it had no egg, just full cream milk.
